Controversy Surrounds IWF "Feminist Deprogramming" Ad

News David Byron sent me this story from the National Review. It covers the news about the full-page ad that the Independent Women's Forum has put in several college and university newspapers, which outlines the "Ten Most Common Feminist Myths" and the reasons they are misperceptions. Christina Hoff Sommers said in response to the outrage related to the ad: "This is a common response, hysteria and irrational reactions...Free and open discussion doesn't exist in most academic forums. Instead of research or debate, they hold rallies and protests - not exactly the most reasonable way to spark discussion."

My compliments to the Daily Bruin staff mentioned in this article. They are behaving precisely the way a newspaper should. Ads are ads and editorial content is editorial content. It's interesting to me that the people who are calling the IWF Nazis are the same people who are attempting to censor the IWF's advertising. I think we can all see who are the true facists.

One more thing: I'm sick of the term "Nazi" being used to describe anyone with an opinion different from mainstream feminism. The Nazis were responsible for the most horrendous oppression of a people in the 20th century. The Nazis detested the free exchange of ideas. How one can call someone a Nazi just for disagreeing with him or her (or for exposing the truth) is beyond me.

I'm sorry, ladies, but any oppression you feel you may have suffered at the hands of men in this country cannot be compared to the suffering the Jewish people experienced in Nazi Germany. You belittle that oppression when you do that, and it's not fair to the people who fought and died to free the world from evil incarnate.

These are the same people who belittle rape victims by calling almost everything "rape" (including being asked again after saying, "No"). They belittle real domestic violence victims by inventing "subtle" (read "fake") forms of domestic violence to inflate the numbers.

In short, they're used to belittling oppression and suffering by using hyperbole. They do it all the time.
