Teacher ‘petrified’ after being attacked by Female student

Story here. Excerpt:

'Six days after she was sucker punched and beaten in her own Baltimore classroom, high school art teacher Jolita Berry still finds it almost impossible to watch the MySpace video of the attack. And she can’t make herself go back to work.
...
The attack happened last Friday morning in Berry’s classroom in Reginald F. Lewis High School in Baltimore. One of the girls in the class approached the 30-year-old teacher and got nose-to-nose with her and threatened her.'

“I told her, ‘You’re in my personal space, back up. If you hit me, I will defend myself,’ ” Berry said. “Before I knew it, she hit me in the face.”'

She "handled" the situation adroitly, by saying "You’re in my personal space, back up. If you hit me, I will defend myself".

I can't remember what those idiot psychologists call that - something like "confrontation techniques" or something. Damn..it's right on the tip of my tongue.

Maybe she should have given the girl "time out". Or told her to listen to a relaxation tape.

This incident is proof positive these "techniques" work. And she didn't defend herself to boot..that must be because she "won't need to"..'cause the idiot fairy psychologist who taught her to make that statement, said it always works!

By the way, how could it have been a "sucker punch", if just before the punch, the teacher made that statement??

the teacher wasn't expecting to be hit. Especially considering that students never have any right to assault teachers, and vice-versa. I consider that a sucker punch.

I think the girl who attacked the teacher should be charged for assault. It's the only way these wild gazelles will ever be taught a lesson.

It seems according to your definition, that at least half the fist-fights ever started begin with a sucker-punch. What is "expected to be hit"? If I knew I was going to be hit, I'd hit first - or at least restrain the other person, or even run away! It appeared to me that in this case, the teacher gave the impression that she well knew she might be hit. The student in fact, probably took it as a dare. That's one big reason it was such a stupid thing to say! It doesn't make sense for her to word that statement the way she did, then later say "I can't believe she hit me!" Probably a good thumbrull, is that when you're in a confrontation, never say you'll defend yourself unless you mean it.

My definition of a sucker punch is when it's totally unexpected, like when someone just walks up out of nowhere, like in a crowd at Mardi Gras or something, and punches you; or, say, a guy and his friends are playing cards, and all of a sudden out of nowhere, one guy punches another (like if there was an existing grudge).
