The pink vigilantes: The Indian women fighting for women's rights

Story here. Excerpt:

"They may dress in candy-pink saris but their reputation is far from sweet.

These woman are the Pink Vigilantes, members of a group sworn to root out corruption in the police force and deliver ruthless summary justice to anyone believed guilty of domestic violence or sexual abuse. The women, who operate in India's northern state of Uttar Pradesh, wear pink as a kind of makeshift uniform - and their ranks have swelled to several hundred strong.

They arm themselves with lathi - traditional sticks - which they have used to beat men who have abandoned or abused their wives and policemen who have refused to register claims of rape."

Hmmm, if what they are saying in the article is true, that due to caste bigotry people of the "untouchable" caste can't even get water w/out getting harassed or assaulted, or legitimate cases of rape are being shrugged off, then what they are doing is not so unreasonable nor unexpected.

However I wonder what Ghandi would say about it. I think when using violence to get what you want starts, it is hard to stop. Will these women stop using violence when they perceive that the others around them are properly chastised and cowed? I think Ghandi saw this kind of pattern and that is why he espoused non-violent protest as a means of brining about change. MRAs and non-custodial fathers have many legitimate grievances that include such things as being arrested under false charges, judicially-sanctioned kidnapping, gov't-regulated fraud and theft, etc. These things hamper day to day life as much as anything else but are done by the gov't and women who recruit the gov't into their service for these purposes. Should such men use violence to bring about change or display their "empowerment"?

This is a tough call on its face, but I wonder what other forms of resistance or petition they tried before they started using sticks to beat up cops?

If their is legitimate beef here, then god bless them. If It's a feminist trojan horse to subject males to indentured servitude like in the U.S., then one should be concerned!!

This is modern day lynching, nothing more. I do not support this. I would advise the men they are attacking to arm themselves and if they harm you, shoot to kill.

These skanks run around delivering ruthless "summary justice" to anyone "believed guilty." That's the same thing that is happening here. The only difference is here the police handle the lynchings for the women in addition to women attacking and murdering men. Look at the caption under the picture that says "Girl Power...."

This is indian feminism being portrayed as "heroic." Women run around and beat up people they believe is guilty they get applause, men defend themselves against violent women and we are "woman abusers."

If a group of men were running around "delivering ruthless summary justice" to women there would be an outrage. Don't buy the line of women as victims, a quick look at the other article submitted shows "Indian MEN" with lashes and such on their bodies due to "hits" put on them by the same violent "pink nazi uniform" wearing women that the men are now cheering on.

I'm so sick of the majority of women and their lopsided version of equality and klan-like tactics.

vigilantes are wrong (one would think) in this instance, on "Gunsmoke" or anywhere else in a civilized society. however, Civil Disobedience is often times necessary, and specifically necessary when said higher fuctioning society refuses to even acknowledge or honestly debate situations where people are badly wronged on a daily basis.

these women have come to realize on a primitive level that they can help change along w/ mass corporal punishment or public shame; and, it appears to be working. it would only seem the better part of valor, now that they have the world's attention, to elevate their protests into something that will endear them, and their cause, not only to their fellow man/womankind, but also unto the memory of those like Gandhi who paid such a high price for their rights and freedoms.

and yes, as MRA's have seen first-hand in the western (so called civilized) societies, this use of force directed by women can quickly get out of hand and be used to destroy. do these poor women really want change for everyone's benefit, or like western feminists, want and want and want w/o end? i say we have seen their claws, now let us determine the color, position and number of their stripes by their future actions.

this should be interesting to monitor seeing how it could easily morph into something evil when people w/ a vested ($$$) interest start getting involved. maybe we could send them some/lots of our lawyers and judges as a good will gesture. i'll chip in on travel expenses.

I don't think this is really a men's issue. They're simply fighting for protection.

The only problem I could really have with them is the same problem with any other type of enforcement. They are going off the word of women when taking action against rape or domestic violence, and we all know how that goes.

If women act like spoiled brats to get what they want, they're praised. If a man were to do the same, he'd get locked away and the key would be thrown away.

And people are encouraging this behaviour? Sigh... whatever... Maybe if pink vigilantes start showing up here beating the "guilty till proven innocent" they might change their tune.

Remember western men and women are the same dolts that allowed -- and encouraged -- misandry to become enshrined in the laws. Remember women also claimed they were "just fighting for their rights" then as well.

You're absolutely right it is the same ol s**t. It's actually sickening that men are accepting it.....again.

Oh well...

what they are doing is nothing but Goondaism .
It is not tit for tat will not happen it will just take time. Mens activism in India till year 2005 was confined to just three cities , Delhi , Bangalore and mumbai . When we start 2008 now covered almost 75% of the urban landscape.
Things will get worse before it becomes better.
but it will become better

Rape is India is defined differently then in western world.

In India if man and women have physical relations and then the man does not marry her then he is seen as guilty of rape.

SO it is actually tactics of forced marriage when they talk of rape.

Helpful insight bharati! I never officially welcomed you...welcome.

As I said people tend to cheer on the new KKK groups formed by women -- even some spineless men -- but if a man is "believed" to be guilty of anything , and fights for his rights , he gets punished.

As I said I hope the men these women are attacking defend themselves.

Greetings bharati,

Does the social custom that you described mean that, most of the time, a young Indian man will have little or no sexual experience before committing to marriage?

Do most Indian men marry the first woman they sleep with?

Or, does that same custom seeking to force men into marriage also fuel a widespread prostitution system?

Is the coercion of "have sex = get married" what is causing the anti-rape backlash and the low prosecution of alleged rapes?

Do women assume if they "give it up" that equals an automatic expectation of marriage?

How do India's young men gain sexual experience before marriage without risk?

In the U.S. where pre-marital sex is easy to obtain, access to a vagina is not a compelling reason to marry today.

But men are constantly from birth under severe cultural pressures to become domesticated and to serve women.

So the situation in India presently is very interesting...

And, thank you for posting at MANN.

Has anyone else tried to post a comment on the Daily Mail's web page? All the comments are of the revenge is sweet, girl power-type. It seems the author won't take any dissent on this one. The Daily Mail is very right wing, and very chivalrous to women, particularly its housewife nazi core readership. The Daily Mail was Hitler's favourite British newspaper.

This reminds me of when I tried to post a comment regarding the "Who's Tired of Pink" article, which slammed all white men. I must admit that my comment was not the most polite, but it certainly wasn't obscene. It was sardonic though, and made the author look like a moron. Thus, they decided not to post it. Not a surprise, considering the Huffington Post is a feminazi publication.

BTW, I would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to bharati for fighting misandry in India and letting us know how the battle's going. The world needs more men like him. I salute you, bharati.

It's interesting how pre-marital sex with no intention of marriage is considered rape in the Indian culture. It's also ridiculous how only the man gets punished. I think the law should be abolished, or that women should be punished too. After all, it takes two to do the matress mambo.

> less in 21st century and 1990s then prior to it
Do most Indian men marry the first woman they sleep with?
> they sleep after marriage

Or, does that same custom seeking to force men into marriage also fuel a widespread prostitution system?
> do not know really

Is the coercion of "have sex = get married" what is causing the anti-rape backlash and the low prosecution of alleged rapes?
> No the reason for low conviction is that it is filed mainly in cases where in a young guy elopes with a girl and then the parents file a rape case on the guy according to delhi police 50% of the cases are like that
Do women assume if they "give it up" that equals an automatic expectation of marriage?
> if the break up is done by man yes
How do India's young men gain sexual experience before marriage without risk?
> They probably do not
In the U.S. where pre-marital sex is easy to obtain, access to a vagina is not a compelling reason to marry today.
> True but then what are the other factors to marry .
But men are constantly from birth under severe cultural pressures to become domesticated and to serve women.

bharati,

So, what I think you are saying is that Indian men are starved for sex, yes?

That is so sad, because Indian women are so incredibly beautiful. (At least the ones I have met.)

How can a culture with hundreds of gods and goddesses and thousands of years of erotic poetry and literature and paintings be so sexually repressed today?

Of course, America has our Puritan ancestors to blame for all our sexual hang-ups.

How do you make sense of this new gender warfare - so much anger between men and women - that is being started in your culture?
