Discrimination in a 'Saudi 'hood'

We need to fight for equality of everyone, and MRAs know that better than anyone else.

It's saddening, then, to see the rules put in place that limit women's freedoms in some countries. It's equally saddening when men's freedoms are limited. Add to that the burdens of legal responsibilities solely put upon men in many countries, and the perception from the West that only women are oppressed, and you have the perfect storm.

Western women and men speak out for women's rights in other countries. They complain that women can't vote, that women can't drive, and women can't leave the house without a man. I always have had a great deal of sympathy for those women, and I continue to, but this Letter of the Day in the National Post opened my eyes to burdens that men suffer in those countries. We only hear one side of the story.

Letter of the Day in the National Post here.

Excerpts:
- "[Anne Applebaum] laments that Saudi women still cannot vote. True enough. But she omits the important fact that Saudi men cannot vote either."
- "[She] is correct, at least, that Saudi women are not allowed to drive. But to be fair, she should also have noted that Saudi women have rights not accorded to Saudi men -- like the legal right to be supported by their nearest male relative"
- "Most parks are designated "for women and children only"; no dogs or men allowed. On the buses, the men must sit in the back; women sit where they like. Men must surrender their seats to women."

The rules that limit women's freedoms in other countries don't sadden me. Why should we tell other countries what to do?

I always suspected that even without topics like sexual mutilation or the draft (which prove that men's rights are not taken seriously there either), something about the depiction of that society here isn't right.
Thanks a lot for pointing the finger at it. This is much needed information.

let me get this straight

highest divorce rate in the world

close to 40 million abortions performed

children's education in a downward spiral

40% of children born out of wedlock

world's largest prison population (and climbing)

yeah, let's give some advice on what's wrong to other countries.

Zing!

You sound like I did about two years ago. I always discounted the typical Ameriskanks rantings -- and insults -- on women in Saudi Arabia. Women whom happen to believe in covering their twats and usually don't see themselves as "oppressed" even though American whores keep labelling them as such.

The Western Woman's Burden anyone?

Is it just me, or has anyone else noticed that most women in the media these days seem to be completely full of shit? The woman who wrote that article about the oppression of women in Saudi Arabia clearly had her facts wrong. But if you're a female writer, or anchor, or anything, you can get away with skewing the facts, or even fabricating them. I'm not sure why this is. I guess, like I said, it's finding something to bitch about, just for the sake of bitching. BTW, well said, daveinga. Another thing, has anyone else noticed how there's a ton of events here in North America which discriminate against us, like "Ladies Only" gyms, and "Ladies' Nights". Thought not a huge deal, that's always gotten on my nerves. Maybe someone should write an article about the oppression of the north american male.

It really shows how much power women have over what we see and hear.
