Boycott RONA

'Canada's advertising watchdog has ruled that a TV commercial promoting RONA, the chain of building supply stores, is unfit for Canadian audiences because it discriminates against men.

The commercial features a woman going into a RONA store with an imaginary complaint call "homestressidous." A sympathetic female clerk suggests that the customer's husband never helps around the house. The customer confirms this and the clerk responds: "That's OK. They (husbands) are all like that."

Under the ad regulator's rules, RONA must either amend or pull the commercial. It may also appeal the decision.'

I don't know about you guys but I know if my wife needs any project done around the house she may pretend to monkey with it for a while but in the long run I end up fixing it, she ends up thanking me, and all is well. This ad is offensive and generalizes all husbands into a lazy class of people. And I will not take that. I could not find a direct e-mail to any one of importance with that company. All I did find was a bunch of models pretending to do things they would never do in real life. BUT, I did find a place you can leave a general comment/question. So I did. Maybe you guys would like to as well.

I have long since believed that a large slice of the advertising industry is brain-dead. They cannot dream up anything original, so resort to their tired old favourite ploy: another excursion into the threadbare world of male-bashing.

Note this: "Mr. Regan, 47, complained first to RONA officials, who responded quickly and said the commercial was meant to be humorous."

Ah yes, the old "it's just a joke" excuse. Another favourite bolt-hole for moral cowards who suddenly find themselves called out and can't come up with a good reason for their actions.

Note this too: "a (RONA)customer service representative who responded in writing to Mr. Regan said the commercial was one of four RONA has been running on HGTV as part of the company's efforts to attract female do-it-yourself customers."

So RONA assumes that female do-it-yourself customers are also misandric sexists. Have they done a survey on their female customers to see if their assumption is justified? Or is it just taken for granted these days? Are there any Canadian female readers here who would care to tell us whether they are happy being stereotyped in this way?

I have a standard way of dealing with businesses that think it is acceptable or funny to insult men. It's a simple two-step process that anyone can apply. Firstly, boycott all products of that business and encourage your family and all your acquaintances to do the same. Secondly, be sure to tell the business exactly what you are doing and why. It helps if you can find a way of getting your message directly to the CEO or other big boss.

The first thing I always do is send of emails to anyone and everyone that I can find emails for at the company. (Funny that all I can find are old snail-mail addresses for this company.) As well as informing them that I will never shop at there store as well as encourage all my friends and family to shop elsewhere for our home project needs. Granted I do not live in Canada but I don't need to inform them of that. But I do hope that others will write and voice your opinions on this add. Also if anyone has an email for any of the higher up people at this company I would love to get my hands on that so I can get my message to the top.

I just thought about it for a minute..the only time I have ever seen a woman do this kind of work anywhere, is this girl I saw doing drywall about seven years ago, but she was working a job for her employer..not a wife doing work around the house. Other than that, the only time I ever see women even remotely doing any job like that, is on TV (like on commercials, or sometimes Bob Villa would have an "assistant"). So in addition to discrimination, it is outright lying to portray this nonsense.

Hometime was an excellent show that had both a male and female host. She did just as much work as he did. THAT is how you encourage gender equality, show that both genders can work together as actual partners, not that one gender has to do the work because the other is lazy.

That is like saying that if you depict more basketball players, in movies, as whites, that will encourage more whites to try out for basketball. Maybe there is some element of truth to it, but my post was more of a reference to depictions in the media, versus reality. And the reality is that only a very small percentage of women do anything more than very basic home repairs. [Note to psychologists: I don't need some "study" to tell me that, just my several decades of life experience.]

Never in my 40 years of existence have I seen or heard of a female doing construction or repairs on a house. I have however, seen lots of bitching by females about how they hate this and that about thier house, and guess whos' job it becomes to fix the house and make her happy.

Yup, that would be us. That commercial is an out and out lie.

I guess it may be a good stereotype that men don't help around the house. The reason why they don't help around the house is because they are busy working at a job to get the money that the woman isn't bringing in. More women do have jobs now, but it's still a lot lower than the rate of men having jobs. Most women just try to find a rich husband, so they can be supported and do nothing their whole life. The least they can do is clean the house.

For observing galaxies like this, use as much aperture as you can get, especially from the city.
