RADAR ALERT: Now the Senate Needs to Call for a DoJ Investigation

In last week's alert, we asked you to contact your Representative in the House and tell them to ask the Department of Justice to investigate what motivated prosecutor Michael Nifong's unwavering efforts to convict men he knew to be innocent. This week we need you to send your Senators the same message.

The critical points to make when you call or email your Senators are:

  • This sort of prosecutorial abuse is not unusual. The only thing unusual about Nifong is that he got caught.
  • If Congress doesn't bring pressure to bear, other prosecutors will continue to violate the law.
  • Failure to require that prosecutors avoid unethical behavior causes the electorate to lose respect for government at all levels.
  • The time for Congress to act is now!

Please contact your Senator today and ask them to have the Department of Justice launch a full-scale investigation to find out exactly what went wrong in the Michael Nifong case.

Here's what to do:

  1. Go to http://www.senate.gov/. At the top, enter your state and look up the names of both your Senators. On the resulting web pages will be information on how to contact both of them either by phone or electronically.
  2. Or you can call the Capitol Switchboard at 202-224-3121 and ask for contact information for both of your Senators.
  3. Then telephone or email each Senator and let him know that you'd like him or her to add his voice to the Representatives and Senators who've already publicly called for a DoJ investigation.

I FAXed both Feinstein and Boxer this morning, then snail mailed hard copies. Helpful, male supportive lawmakers, they aren't.
