"Women can be as violent as men" says feminist Doris Lessing

Story here. Excerpt:

'Doris Lessing, the novelist and feminist icon, said that women could be warmongers and as violent as men, in a speech yesterday.

Speaking at the Hay on Wye Festival, Lessing, 87, said that although history suggested women were peaceful, some of the worst crimes had been committed by females.

"There is a lot of sentimentality about women. We like to think that women are kind and motherly and are not going to go to war. But it's not true, is it?

"History suggests women are peace loving and law abiding - on the contrary some of the worst crimes have been committed by women," she said.'

I don't remember too many women protesting World War II or Hiroshima - in fact, weren't they making the sandwiches? The fact is that if women think combat is necessary, for example national defense, they will be supportive toward it as much so as men. Only a slightly less percent of women than men, initially supported the Iraq war. (Of course so did Hillary Clinton, soon to be Queen Nurturer).

PS: Ha ha, RandomMan - you crack me up!! I think we get the message about your opinion on McElroy :-) (You didn't think I would be looking at this thread, did you?)

That's why I contrasted my comments about McElroy with my comments about Lessing, to highlight the differences in what these two feminists were saying.

I agree RandomMan, it's like some white person saying "You see, we need to treat Black people better because we can sometimes be as lazy as them". How far do you think that would go towards racial equality?

I don't buy this "anything men can do, women can do just as well" schtick. Yes, momma bear can be quite violent if you mess with baby bear, but the idea that "women could be warmongers and as violent as men" just doesn't wash w/moi. The women having catfights on Springer or Maury Povitch are more humorous than dangerous.

Given their smaller size and lesser strength it just wouldn't make much sense for women to go around picking for a fight when they can get men to do it (and all other unpleasant work) for them.

Patricia Pearson's book "When She Was Bad" of about a decade ago lays out quite well the differences between the sexes when it comes to violence.

This is not to say that women in the modern world (such as a Thatcher or even a Sillary) can't take on the male role and be warmonger-in-chief for a time.

Women and men are not biologically the same. However, the myth of males being violent and women being peaceful and nurturing is a load of horseshit--which is in-fact shown to be false everyday--that chivalrous male buffoons continously buy into wholesale.

Violence stems from an emotional reaction.
Men and women both experience the same emotions in life.
You could say that men act on aggression more than women, but the evidence doesn't hold up to that.

Women pick fights all the time. They have lots of options so that they're not at a disadvantage from their size:

1 pick fights with people that are smaller than you
2 pick fights with people the same size as you
3 make sure you have another advantage when you pick a fight

Child abuse numbers show that women certainly do #1.
DV numbers certainly show that women do #3 [advantage, legal, weapons, get help from others, etc].

#2 (Cat fights) which you, and most people focus on are actually the least concerning because they are fair fights.
