Wendy McElroy: Abortion Bills Violate Men's Rights

Story here. Excerpt:

"Right to Life of Michigan describes the penalties for leaving. "A misdemeanor charge for actions that do not physically threaten a woman, but clearly constitute a coercive element (relationship, financial or housing arrangements) would subject the perpetrator to fines up to $2000…If the pregnant woman is under the age of 18 and the perpetrator of the coercion is the adult father of the unborn child, the punishment would be imprisonment for not more than 1 year or a fine of not more than $5000, or both."

The proposed Michigan abortion-coercion bills simply mirror the DV Industry's very successful tactics of criminalizing men a priori while depriving men of their due process rights.

(Ms. McElroy writes) -- "The problem arises with the definition of "coercive acts" and "threats." The definitions include filing or an "attempt to file for a divorce," the withdrawal or "attempt to withdraw financial support," and the changing "or attempt to change an existing housing or cohabitation arrangement with the pregnant female."

Note that legal terms for being prosecuted/convicted of a crime would now include such acts as --

"attempting," "withdrawing," "seeking to change...."

So, let's be (hypothetically) precise:

If a man in a relationship with a pregnant female (regardless of whether he is the man who inseminated her) suggests in a verbal statement: "Honey, we need to think about the long-term consequences of having a baby right now... our money probems, our studio apartment... and maybe we should talk about our options."

Any such man will certainly be prosecuted under the terms of the proposed laws.

This is --- a THOUGHT/SPEECH CRIME law being proposed against men!

Oh, and consider this scenario ---

The woman wants to have an abortion and her male partner wants to bring the pregnancy to term, and then put the baby up for adoption, and continue to invest in their relationship sans baby he suspects that he did not make!

(Kim Gandy, we know you are lurking! What's NOW's always "committed-to-gender-equality" position on this matter?)
