Duke and the Death of Academe

Article here. Excerpt:

"Thus, when a black stripper claimed that members of the lacrosse team gang-raped her, faculty members seized the moment. The truth of the charges themselves was irrelevant; these young men represented everything these faculty members despised, and they were not going to permit something as bourgeois as truth stand in the way of their attempt to remake Duke University in their own image – and perhaps be able to help railroad innocent young men into prison, which they would have seen, ironically, as a triumph of justice."

He seems to start out spewing forth his anti-left bias; then he raises the issue of how the truth in this case is being subverted by these leftists (it seems to me that all political extremists do this).
(Note: I did not see the words "feminism" or "feminist" in the article).

Then he says:

"Here were young men who were socially popular, were overwhelmingly white and prep-school educated, were respectful to their professors, made high grades, majored in things like finance, and took well-paying jobs after graduation. In other words, they were the epitome of the bourgeoisie that the arts and sciences faculty have hated with all the passion their Marxist training could muster."

Now it sounds like he is talking about an internal rift within Duke (and perhaps other elite universities), between the leftist arts and sciences department (does he mean SOCIAL sciences? He doesn't even say), and I guess the not-so-leftist (supposedly) faculty of other curriculum (again assumedly, finance, management etc).

He also wrongly implies that all the students are against the three guys. I saw some of the fellow students being interviewed on TV, including female students, who were saying they did not believe the three were guilty.

This writer sounds like sort of a rambling jackass, determined to use this incident to bash leftists. The good part of the article is near the end, when he says the three guys are basically being used as pawns to advance an agenda - they MUST be found guilty regardless of the truth. Unfortunately, instead of coming out and saying it is the feminist agenda (apparently he is being P.C. on this issue), he blames the leftist element.

The longer this incident drags on, the more opportunities will be created for pundits such as this writer to put any spin they want on it.

What is the fucking problem with everybody? Some male college athletes got rowdy and hired a stripper. Big deal. Then she accused them of rape and the allegations turned out to be false. The most punishment they should have gotten is a two or three game suspension (I think lacross season is in the Fall). The stripper should be fined for lying to the police; and let that be the end of it. I know that last statement will infuriate some MRA's, but this particular incident has been blown WAY out of proportion and generated a tons of animosity , and caused many talented people (lawyers, educators, commentators etc.) to waste time. It is better for everyone to just move on; unfortunately at this point I guess there is no turning back.
