Men, Women More Different Than Thought

bandersnatch writes "According to this article, researchers are discovering that men and women are even more different than anyone realized. However, as usual, the researchers and doctors interviewed for this article, seem obsessed with making treatment more "female-friendly". Even at the end of the article, there are links provided to two female-only health organizations."

Hypocritical Protests on T-Shirt Designs

D. E. Unrau writes "This article
"has a T-shirt that plays on the issue of domestic violence is generating plenty of controversy as well as getting attention from the Ontario government.

The shirt is sold at a St. Catharines clothing store and features a hammer dripping with blood above a statement that reads, "she was asking for it.''"

What the article doesn't say, and what wasn't protested it all, is that the store also sells a shirt that has a pair of bloody scissors that says "he was asking for it.""

Women are the future of I.T. (?)

robrob writes "It is reported here that Professor Wendy Hall, computer scientist, advisor to the government, and president of the British Computer Society thinks the future of I.T. is female. Perhaps she could answer why everytime certain "female" skills are seen as important, women seem to think that they will soon dominate that particular field. As for her suggestion that we could discriminate by allowing women to study IT at university for free, we could perhaps ask her if we could do the same for men in medicine, law and teaching courses where men are now under-represented. Remember, she's an advisor to the UK Government!"

Modern Schools: Girls Good, Boys Bad

Anonymous User writes... "Glenn Sacks's latest piece, Start of School Very Different for Parents
of Boys, Parents of Girls, criticizes the school system, saying
"rather than reform a system woefully out of touch with boys' real world natures and needs, our schools find it easier to demand that boys be something other than boys." Read it here."

Latest Dumb Dad Sitcoms

TLE writes "The new TV season offers us a couple more stupid dad shows. The first is CBS's "Listen Up" with Seinfeld's Jason Alexander as an idiot dad with a comb-over who embarrasses his intelligent beautiful teenage daughter. The other is ABC's "Rodney," which features a loser redneck wannabe standup comic who can't hold a regular job, is a bad influence on his kids, and is addicted to betting. The frustrated wife tolerates him because, well, she loves him in spite of all his shortcomings. There's a feedback form at the bottom of the CBS website here. ABC viewer relations can be emailed at: netaudr@abc.com. I will be sharing my unambiguous thoughts with them."

Is the woman's draft coming?

bandersnatch writes "According to this article in Seattle Post-Intelligencer, the chief of the Selective Service System has proposed registering women for the military draft. The only question I have is, if they were to introduce the draft again, think the girls would be sharing the front lines with the boys?"

Sacks Attacks 'Fatal Fathers' Myth

Anon user writes "Glenn Sacks takes on the latest anti-father media drumbeat in his new column "'Fatal Fathers' Myth Promoted in Wake of Peterson, Hacking Cases" (Daily Breeze [Los Angeles], 9/17/04, LewRockwell.com, 9/17/04). According to Sacks, despite the furor, "...only one out of every 75,000 are murdered by a male intimate each year. Moreover, contrary to popular belief, there are as many wives and girlfriends who murder their male partners as vice versa."

Domestic Violence Coalition sued

Ray Blumhorst writes "The Domestic Abuse Helpline for Men (DAHM) and a person identified as John Doe have filed suite against the Maine Coalition to End Domestic Violence
here. The news article quotes "Andy" Slater (who is representing DAHM) as saying, "The Domestic Abuse Helpline for Men wants to assist battered men and their children with the same ability that the nine coalition members do with women and their children," Slater goes on to say, "It appears on its face that the coalition is drawing a distinction and stating that women and children deserve more protection than men."

At the risk of repeating himself Ray Blumhorst asks yet again, "Would You Help A Domestic Violence Shelter That Helps Men?" here and especially here. It appears "on its face" that the Maine Coalition to End Domestic Violence has a hearing problem, or even worse a prejudice against men problem."

Shortage of surgeons in U.S.

thatold55 writes "About two months ago, we were discussing concerns within the British medical community that the full spectrum of medical care was not being covered because of the influx of women into medical schools, and the unsuitability of some areas of specialization to the needs and wants of women. See this archived Mensactivism
article.

Now, Newsweek reports a similar trend in American medical care. Residency requirements for surgeons require 80 to 120 hour week of training. This requirement, and the general unpleasantness of working with nasty, veteran male surgeons, is causing women doctors to shy away from surgery. Depending on how you look at things, we face either a shortage of surgeons, or a glut in ob/gyn, internalist, and gp areas."

DLJ Gets Back

Trudy W Schuett writes "Since March, the DesertLight Journal blog has been posting Friends to the End, the first-ever novel on domestic violence with a male victim. The book now appears in its entirety. It will stay up at the blog until October 1st, when it will be removed from the site.

The book will be replaced with a new campaign to promote full awareness of the issue of domestic violence. This campaign will be the simplest, and possibly the most effective so far. The way it will work is this: I’m asking everyone to track their local media and keep an eye out for stories on DV shelters and services that promote the well-known myths and bad statistics. Send me a link to these stories when they appear online, or in national media that I can access. I’ll post them on the DLJ blog, and contact the source with corrections whenever possible. I’ll be happy to credit each of you who submit links!

If you have a blog or website of your own, please feel free to post this announcement there, or pass it along to your friends however you like. On October 1st, I’ll post the most frequently-repeated misinformation for everyone’s reference, along with the reasons why the statements are wrong. Please don’t hesitate to use this information in making your own contacts.

If bloggers and new media can take down CBS, there isn’t any reason why we can’t make a dent in domestic violence services that serve no one, and exist primarily to promote divorce and misandry.

Please use this e-mail to submit your information: DVA2004 at desertlightjournal –dot-com
You can also send a postcard to: TW Schuett P.O. Box 1252 Yuma AZ 85366

Also, the DLJ will continue to provide the link for donations to DAHM."
