Warren Farrell on NBC Nightly News Tonight
posted by Thomas on 02:53 PM November 11th, 2005
News Warren Farrell writes "Here's NBC's question: If a mom takes a leave of absence, if she wishes to return should she be guaranteed her same job at the same pay? I think you'll appreciate my answer (a la Why Men Earn More). NBC Nightly News is this Friday, Nov. 11th at 6:30 pm Eastern, 5:30 in the rest of the country. And that would be the perfect time to do an Amazon order if you are thinking about giving your daughter or son a Christmas or Chanukah present that will both help them earn more and have a better life."

You can let NBC know your answer by writing to Nightly@NBC.com.

If you haven't purchased Warren's latest book, "Why Men Earn More: The Startling Truth Behind the Pay Gap -- and What Women Can Do About It," this is a good time to provide support for a man who has done a tremendous amount to advance men's rights.

To Warren or anyone else,

Please type the question asked and your (Warren's) reply here. I wish you had given us a little advanced notice. I missed the broadcast. Also, I tried to listen to it on www.nbc.com but it wouldn't play properly on my computer.

Thanks.

Unfortunately, I missed it, too.
I usually steer clear of NBC, because they are one of the more biased news outlets.
Sorry I missed Mr. Farrell, though.

I went to the library where they have DSL. Sooooo much better than a modem connection.

Here are parts of the segment. I cherry-picked. Too long to copy the whole thing:

They are talking about a woman who took 3 years off her previous job to raise her kids and now is complaining that she can't get an executive job commensurate with her knowledge and abilities, much less one at her old salary, in spite of her Warton MBA.

Brian Williams: ... The women who work outside the home leave those jobs to raise kids and then want to go back but when they do they often can't go back where they were. Is it the way it oughta be or is that inherently unfair?

Reporter: ... Quietly many in the workforce who didn't take time off say fair is fair. Author Warren Farrell says CEO's have told him they can't afford to hire these women back.

Warren: You can't ask the company to subsidize you being at home with your children and still be expecting to work for a company that's going to be tough in its field for 20 or 30 years.

Reporter: MBA student Ester Hong wants to run a company but unlike women of a previous generation concede she may have to give up that dream.

Ester: If I go home and want to have kids, I'm not going to be able to be as successful as my male counterparts when I want to come back into the workforce.

Reporter: Something (whining woman's name) says she's already discovered.

Notice everyone's whining, including this student who asserts the problem is between men and women rather than individuals who take off years from work to bring up their kids and those who don't, as though men would be treated differently if they did the same thing as these women want to do.

Sooooo typical! The solution would be sooooo simple if these women were really as smart as they claim to be. The solution? Start your own company if you're really so smart and all these companies are so wrong not to hire you back. Prove them wrong and create the experience you desire!!!! And make just as much money or even more if you're really worth the money you claim to be worth. And you don't have to cry on anyone's shoulder to accomplish it.

Problem solved!
