Article Retracted
posted by Matt on 12:27 PM October 11th, 2005
Announcements All,

MANN received good information that the article regarding the adoptive mother who wanted a sex change operation for her son was, as many of you suspected, incorrect. All I can say is: Sorry! It was posted and defended in good faith (hey, even major media sources print bad stories from time to time). So, the story has been removed from MANN and sorry again for accidentally publicizing what appears now to be a false story.

One of the sad things is that things have gotten so crazy that the story seemed at all plausible.

Thomas-
Yes, I agree wholeheartedly. If this story HAD been true it still wouldn't have been a bit surprising, the way things are now-a-days.

Methinks that there were a couple of signs in the article which indicated that it was a hoax, apart from the fact that no surgeon would perform such surgery on a 2-year old, or indeed on anyone without extensive counselling.

1. The surgeon was described as "possibly a flaming lesbian", not a phrase used in a serious news report.
2. "That's why I'm a lesbian, duh." Smacks rather of Homer Simpson, son't you think?

To say the least, I was skeptical from the start. Nevertheless, the reason the article had a sick, humorous quality, and the reason that many people were taken in, was because the article was just a bit of an exaggeration of the way things are today. I wouldn't expect such wording in a serious article, but I wouldn't be surprised to hear it stated behind many closed doors.

I'm happy to hear that Matt. I'm removing the story immediately as well. Sorry for the aggravation...

At least the story was removed once it was revealed to be false. Without wanting to sound all smug, it proves we're not like feminists, who peddle false statistics (1 in 4 women raped, women are paid less for the same work, etc) not only knowing they're totally false but continuing to spew them out long after they've been thoroughly disproved.

You need to learn how to do some research. The stats mentioned (re rape and pay equality) are not false just because they don't fit into your whiny woe-is-me universe. Acceptance is the first step.
