Man Imprisoned For Impersonating Ex
posted by Adam on 11:05 AM July 9th, 2004
News borgy1 writes "Prosecutors charged that Anthony Lee Napier posed as his ex in Internet chat rooms -- looking for sex partners. Napier -- impersonating his former wife -- gave out her address and phone number and said she would play dumb when the men called but still wanted sex. This week he was sentenced to two years in prison and another 10 on supervised probation. Quite a harsh sentence for this crime. Compare this to false allegations of domestic or child abuse. Rarely is the women punished at all. Article here"

Exactly what were the charges - the article is vague. I didn't know it was against the law to be an asshole, but apprently it is.

Fair enough that this sort of harrassment should attract a penalty, but the judge in this case has no sense of proportion!

In Canada the only *criminal* charge involving harrassment is called 'criminal harrassment' and the person must be in credible fear and apprehension for their life, *and* being physically followed.

It seems to be a trend in Western nations, especially in the USA to put as many citizens as possible (mostly still men of course, but there are a growing number of women like Martha Stewart who are getting the shaft by the system too!) into a Stalinist era type Gulag prison system for the slightest of provocation and technicalities.
I think the US recently passed Red China in the proportion of its population behind bars or under supervised probation, house arrest and so on.
I thought the West was a community that loved freedom and liberty for the individual? But as Charles Dickens said, "the first order of business of the law is to make more business for itself."
