'Straight Plan for the Gay Man'

from the New-Show-Finds-Faults-in-Men dept.
The Media Matt writes "Comedy Central seems to be countering the notion of the "inherent defect" of straight men that is part of our misandrist culture with a new TV show. Read it here. Guess we'll see what they do with it."

What I read doesn't look like "countering" the notion that straight men have defects but rather promoting that view even more. From the article...

"The make-overs include lessons in such areas as spartan home decorating, oafish manners, less-than-fashionable wardrobes, and an overdeveloped ego to mask all personal failings"

If anything I expect this show to say that straight guys are defective but so are gay guys. Yay, all men are bad!

Asinine shows that portray heterosexual men as oafish slobs with overblown egos to compensate for purported personal failings. Along with the other stupid sitcoms out there like "Everybody Loves Raymond" and "King of Queens."

I don't know how this stereotype of oafish slobby heterosexual men got started, or why being neat and organized is associated with being gay. For example, I'm a neatnick myself, but definitely not homosexual. I'm sure a lot of other straight men are too. We don't need these stupid shows, thanks.

Being bisexual (and therefore supposedly conforming to the stereotype of one who sits on fences, otherwise known as a mugwump) I agree nonetheless. We don't really need these stereotypes. Believe me, you'd never guess me to be a member of a sexual minority. I don't conform to the stereotype. Please read on while I totally f**k up a couple of stereotypes here:

The gay SUBculture is a small but highly visible minority within the gay community with very restrictive ideas of what it means to be gay. You know the type: the trannies, the pansies, the bdsm leathermen, etc. They tend to think with their little heads and seem to equate homosexuality with getting laid as many times as possible and bragging about their conquests. Unfortunately, some straights tend to accept the image these people present all too readily. Here's a clue: You WON'T notice the gays who act straight naturally, and believe me, there are many. Just because we don't tattoo it on our foreheads doesn't mean we're not here. Some of us drink beer, play football, belch, fart, make obscene noises with our armpits, have five o'clock shadow 24/7 and don't wash our hair for days on end. Do you find this concept disturbing? If so, why? Could it be we have more in common than you thought? Hey, s'okay. Chill, dude. We're all men here, after all (at least, I am).

Hmm. . . sorry, that's a straight stereotype. Imagine that: a gay man conforming to a straight streotype, maybe even (gasp) LIKING to revel in his own masculinity. Well, it happens sometimes. The fact is, most of us simply aren't cut out to be drag queens (although I do like to take a shower occasionally, when its needed. I think most straights share that same preference. Why does masculine=dirty for some people anyway?).

And then, on the other hand, you have YOUR straight transvestites. Think about it, guys, and compare him to the gay guy whom you'd never notice if you passed him on the street.

If anyone else of gay or bisexual orientation reads this, please try to avoid the gay SUBculture altogether unless that really is your thing. It really has very little to do with being gay. Remember that your sexual orientation doesn't have to define your self image. Please don't help to promote the stereotypes of either straights or gays.

Well, how's that for men's activism? Hopefully I shattered a stereotype or two here.

Yours truly, INSOMNIAC.

Time for a little rant to take that thar fire from ma belly. I musta missed being edumacated, what with growing up and all, but why in the hell is it ok to make me and all my other Hetero buddies look like we are two generations from dragging our knuckles? I mean, I let my wife buy her first pair of shoes last week. T'wasn't a reason before, cept it got to be a mite cold up here in Eki-mo land. And sensetive? Hell, I makes sure I listen to my wife bitch for at least 2 minutes a night before a-smacking her. And dressing good, hell, I gots me my overalls that Pa gave me and theys just as good as when I gots em, since the little missus sews em for me. And so what if my dogs ride shotgun while the baby maker sits in the back of the flat bed, toughens up the woman.
Now, back to reality: I can't get over how there cannot be one show, granted that I can think of, where there is one wise, stable, helpful, responsible, and gentle man is portrayed as the anchor of his family. Should he have flaws? Of course, but let him be a positive role model. Otherwise we should have white men in black face play African Americans, Submissive clutzy and bubbleheaded women play wives, greedy and conniving malcontents play Jews, and Charlie Chan types play Asians. Since all those stereo-types are FREAKING REPUGNANT >>>>>>>>> WHY IS IT OK TO SHIT ALL OVER MEN .
Sorry, but this kind of shit just sets me off sometimes.
Be blessed all
