Berlin Opens Battered Men's Shelter

Domestic Violence SJones writes "Berlin is opening the first battered men's shelter in Germany. I found the article in Yahoo! Oddly Enough, which shows what they think of violence against men and men's issues in general. The article is here." The "Oddly Enough" section is reserved for "fringe" news stories, and it does say a lot about the public perception of abused men that this story was placed in this section.

Reminds me of the time I tried to organize a men's shelter, in Jackson County, Indiana.

> I was sniffed at that "There was a lack of enough women's shelters to justify a men's shelter.

> I was laughed at that nobody would use it.

> A sample budget was passed around email including items such as "blow up dolls" "NAMBLA fliers" "The Porn Allowance" "Beer Rations."

> It was a running joke that a "no women" policy (Such as is omnipresent in reverse in women's shelters) would result in it being shut down in a week for health code violations.

> The police made it clear that unless I gave them blanket permission to come in and search for men "stealing" children at any time that I could expect no police protection.

> My house and car were vandalized by the pheminist on the commision. The pictures I had of her car there were lost, and no prosecution was ever made, nor was an incident report ever filed.

> I made an application for funds for a shelter for victims of domestic violence. It was approved for $20,000. I was later threatened with fraud, and the approval yanked because "men are not victims, but perpetrators of DV."

> I tried to buy/rent - once I had a lease signed, and twice I was at closing stages. These were yanked at the last minute, citing only "concerns." The only person who would speak to me off the record stated that the planning commission made it clear that if he helped me zoning for all his property would be "reviewed."

> At the instgation of a cop whose pheminist wife was on the city board, I was harassed with traffic tickets, had my license suspended, and was jailed twice for traffic infractions that carried no jail term. No lawyer would take my case - "I have to practice law in that county."

And so on.

And so forth.

Needless to say, this was a non-story so far as the media was concerned.

This is a primary reason I have participated in an "underground railroad" for men for several years. The system does not work.

TGK, Thank you for your efforts. You inspire me (and I'm sure others as well) to do what we can to protect the rights of men. Your endeavor to set up a men's shelter may not have succeeded, but it was not in vain. Thanks for fighting for my rights; rest assured I will fight for yours.

Even the authoritative "Leviathan" can not continue to function as a polity when it becomes the cause of, and not the solution to, sanctifications that jeopordize the state of peace ;)
