India: Hope for male prisoners
posted by Matt on 11:06 AM June 22nd, 2006
Inequality Anonymous User writes "Friday, a new law comes into effect. Under this law, a prisoner can claim bail as a matter of right if he/she has been under detention for more than half the prescribed period of imprisonment.

There were more than 217,000 undertrials in Indian jails (2003), 96.5% of whom were male. See http://ncrb.nic.in/PS-2003.pdf.

With this law, about 50,000 inmates are expected to be set free. Most of them will be male since males typically spend more time in jail as undertrials."

How is this men's rights related? I'm not at all surprised that India has mostly male prisoners - women are not as likely to commit crime because of a myriad of reasons including the fact that its the man's job to provide, but this piece doesn't strike me as male-positive news.

Did you see this outrgeous change in law?

prohibition of arrest of a woman after sunset and before sunrise except in exceptional circumstances.

And they say men and women are equal?
