Men also suffering from media/society body image pressures
posted by Matt on 07:18 PM March 17th, 2006
Men's Health Tirryb writes "BBC.co.uk reports here that men now suffer from the same pressures woman have complained of for years - pressure to change your body to conform to society and the media's view of how you SHOULD look.

Apparently as much as 20% of eating disorders occur in men, 25% of men lie about their health/weight etc because they feel pressured to live up to stereotypes and many are unhappy with how they look.

So, are we to be helped in this? Apparently not - quote from the piece:

"He said: "It is often easier to get through to men using image than it is to get through to them on health."But there is a danger with the way that we highlight issues that it can skew perceptions of risk.""

Apparently sounds like its acceptable to screw men up pyschologically, as long as it might benefit their health to do so..."

I have been amazed at the growth of Mens care products in the stores. Hair removal, as it isn't PC to have a hairy chest anymore. The shaving thing has been pushed for years, and even by some church groups. I saw a big ad in the local mall for electrolisis for Men with pictures of in shape young Men with no hair. I have had a beard for most of my life. I wouldn't shave my chest for anybody. I know a lot of Guys that are very self conscious about the shape they are in. Gee, Men have image problems too! Wait a minute, that must mean they have feelings as well! Of course they do! The rest is just manipulation and hogwash. "It is a good day to die!"

Why is it wrong to have a hairy chest?

I don't have a hairy chest, myself. (How many hairy Indians do you know? I can barely grow a moustache)

When did it become 'Politically incorrect'? Is it something to do with feminists trying to further feminize men?

Yet another side effect of the feminization of the planet...

What someone needs to do is point out to the "lads" that women lack much of an aesthetic sense and can hardly tell a decent looking man from a hideous one. [If women had an aesthetic sense there would be (for one) many more famous/great women artists.] So they're wasting their time thinking good looks will help them land a chick. Women will find any success-object type man "good-looking".
