Whether they wanted it or not. "

If we lived in a country that actually listened to the majority of its' People, then and only then would mandatory service be equitable. Since we live in a country that panders to the elite and discounts the needs and wants of its' People, the draft is a crime against the People of the U.S. Similar to conscription in the old days, the only difference between then and now is back then they got you drunk and perhaps laid before you woke up in chains. Now they use words and legaleze to do the same thing, except you don't get a lump on your head, and you miss the booze and perhaps the last piece you may ever get. As far as the rich getting drafted, show me a list of the rich that actually got drafted into the grunts and put on the front lines. I do mean the rich, not middle management.

I was in the Army. I did not feel kinship or brotherhood with the people with whom I served simply because I served with them. There are good people in the military and there are bad people in the military. Being forced to work with scumbags does not make them any less of scumbags.

Apathy? The "Me" Culture? Racial and religious intolerance? I assure you that each and every one of these problems is alive and well in the nation's armed forces.

Patriotism can mean a thousand different things to a thousand different people.

The American Culture has changed significantly in the 32+ years since the draft was retired. It will not be "just like Vietnam". More people attend college today, and will not easily put their studies on hold. The draft will only return if we let it.
