Schoolboy's Bias Suit
posted by Matt on 01:22 PM January 26th, 2006
Education Return of the King writes "A Milton, MA High School senior has filed a federal discrimination suit, saying his school is unfair to boys. Excerpt:

'At Milton High School, girls outnumber boys by almost 2 to 1 on the honor roll. In Advanced Placement classes, almost 60 percent of the students are female.

It's not that girls are smarter than boys, said Doug Anglin, a 17-year-old senior at the high school.

Girls are outperforming boys because the school system favors them, said Anglin, who has filed a federal civil rights complaint contending that his school discriminates against boys.

Among Anglin's allegations: Girls face fewer restrictions from teachers, like being able to wander the hallways without passes, and girls are rewarded for abiding by the rules, while boys' more rebellious ways are punished.'"

it wouldn't be so bad if the decoration thing was left up to the student's discretion.

but forcing the use of typically feminine decorations is simply unfair.

boys don't associate with that. of course there's always the exception but for simplicity's sake, typically feminine things don't appeal to boys.

and the better not pull that "but they have to get in touch with their feminine side" crap. they don't encourage girls to get in touch with their masculine side and nobody complains.

I'm a man. I don't have a "feminine side". If I did I'd be what Indians typically refer to as a "two spirit". In plain English that means a Homosexual.

I hope this goes well. It sounds like he is handling the situation smoothly. I am always worried that people who do something like this are going to say something to make themselves look bad. That they will give something to the spin-doctors.

Have you guys read any of the posted messages on that site? In my opinion, he HAS said all of the right things, and I relate to him a lot, but it looks like he's not being taken seriously by a lot of people. Some think he's doing this for attention! (Some were even stupid enough to imply that he's doing this because it's easier than studying.) Doug Anglin makes a good point, but I fear that he won't be taken seriously by enough people to make an impact. And then, when the ordeal is over, he'll be ridiculed at school and his life will become even harder. If it sounds like I'm speaking from experience, it's because I am. If I sound jaded, it's because I am.

Why is it such a "far-fetched" proposal that students should be given for sports, especially if art and drama courses are credit courses? People in the drama department stay long hours after school working on set design, choreography, or just plain rehearsing. Everything worth learning from drama can be gained just as (or more) effectively from sports. Sports teach teamwork, sportsmanship, and hard work. Sometimes, practice can be physical Hell (no, I'm not exaggerating) and its unfair that no credit is awarded to that.

Yes, but sports teaches "violence against women".

Well, that's what the feminists say. And of course if a feminist says it it MUST be true.(Sarcasm, of course)

I can never understand how a game like football, for instance, where you are "attacking" and tackling OTHER MEN, promotes violence against WOMEN!(???)
But then, I'm not rational like a feminist. (sarcasm, again, of course)

Another reason high school credits should be awrarded to students who play sports: the United States is the fattest country in the world. Giving credits for sports players would encourage more people to play and get into shape. I feel passionately about this because I was forced to quit track due to the fact that by grades were starting to drop from mid 80's to high 70's. And of course, since track gives no high school credits, I had to abandon my body and let it waste away as I buried myself in books once more.

true, becoming highly proficient in a sport takes a lot of effort and sacrifices.

if sports aren't worth giving credits to, then arts and drama shouldn't either.

sure, they teach you some qualities and skills but the activity itself isn't anymore productive than football or baseball.

being highly skilled at either arts or sports however takes serious dedication.

also kinda of like jesus said. something along the lines of "you can't serve two masters".

It's ridiculous to complain when you're being told to stay in your seat and behave, if everyone is being told that. He should focus more on where girls and boys are treated DIFFERENTLY: for example, if girls are allowed to wander the halls without a pass while boys are punished if they do the same. He'll need to include times in which teachers bent over backwards to ignore the male students so that they could call on a girl.
