WashPost: Grass-Roots Men's Ministries Growing
posted by Matt on 03:58 PM February 6th, 2005
Men & Religion Remarkable, this from the Post! It isn't mean-spirited, hostile, or openly misandrist! Amazing!

Some from the article:

"Men are very confused today about what it means to be a man," said Burke Community Church senior pastor Jack Elwood. "While women are encouraged to be all you can be, men don't know what they want to be. . . . Are they supposed to be a helper or a leader?"

Men's ministries "help men come up with a vision . . . that's bigger than just get a paycheck, go through life, get married, have kids and die," Elwood said. "A lot of men . . . wake up in their forties and say, 'Is this all there is?' I've been ministering to men for 30 years. . . . This is more and more evident to me as a pastor."

I don't think so. I think men are fed up with being depicted as evil, just because they're male. Men are fed up with being treated like mules or worker drones. Men are fed up with having to pay for sex, as if having sex is a favor that women do for men. Men are fed up with being tossed out of their family and being deprived of a relationship with their children. Men are fed up with being treated as disposable sub-humans.

Men aren't confused. They are starting to understand what's going on, and they are not willing to be told any longer to shut up and "be a man". Take that old image of "man" and flush it!
