Superbowl advertising: 'Mama`s boy' Dolls
posted by Matt on 10:46 PM February 1st, 2005
Masculinity chicago joe writes "The makers of "Degree for Men" deodorant are launching a new ad campaign for their product during the second quarter of the Super Bowl game. The commercial is titled "Mama's boy" and it stars action figures that will be sold on the internet. The other commercials to follow will feature the "Wuss" and the "Suck up". The company will eventually sell the dolls seen in the commercials through the internet after the initial Super Bowl spot. They will be titled the "In-Action Heroes" because a company spokesperson said, "Their determination is to avoid risk and remain inactive". They claim this is supposed to motivate men to take risks. Give me a break! Of course they think it is quite creative and funny. If you Google "Degree for Men", you can read it for yourselves. Look for the link that says "New Degree(R) for Men begins blitz"."

Anyone have a link where I can write these meat heads? NO, (subliminal begin) men don't take enough risks (firefighters) we need to get out there (police) and break this (ironworker) stereo type (factories) cause we (roofers) always play (high sucide rates) it safe (miners) and (industrial) hord all the office (construction)jobs unlike (carpenters)you know who (garbage men, electricians) (subliminal end). I find it unfortunate they portray a negative add when the could so easily of portrayed their product with real risk taking work men do.

...Why don't they make a female doll?
It could be made out of spounge! You know to represent all the women out there who think it's all about "Me, me, me, me." Who absourb all the time, money and energy of the male dolls.

They could call her "Spounge Barb fat pants".

Oops!
I guess that should have been "SPONGE Barb" not "spounge".
Well, you get the idea.

That reminds me of a something I saw in the joke column of a different site:

It's Divorce Barbie...she comes with all of Ken's stuff.

They want guys to take more risks? Hell, every guy who goes on a date is taking a big risk, let alone the ones crazy enough to get married. We are the ultimate risk-takers as it is.

By "risk", I guess they mean for men to willingly stick their heads into a bon fire.

That's just NUTS!

But that's pretty much what we are dealing with, with our sisters, now a days.

LOL, I didn't know that. That's pretty amusing, that they would actually bother to specify that as part of some kind of "doll soap opera." Their idea of a good role model I guess.

Your right about the insideous subliminal thing. The negative stereotype that enters the mind vicariously has more of an effect than a direct insult because it isn't critically examined. This has been proven over and over again, esp. by feminist groups. Of course, they'll be quick to complain when it's a negative portrail of women, and equally as quick to marginalize us as whiners when we use their same arguments. I copied the following from the press release. Appearantly, It's a mega corp called Unilever. They've lost my business for their whole line.

The campaign was developed by Lowe New York. Additional commercial spots in the Degree For Men campaign will air throughout the year. To see the In-Action Heroes in "inaction" after the Super Bowl, visit http://www.inactionheroes.com/ .

Was searching for "inaction heroes" and happened to come across this thread...I had to laugh at the response here considering the years and years of ads (specifically during football games) that completely objectify and cheapen women. Don't know if you noticed lately, but mama's boys and wusses abound nowadays...I am not referring to sexual preference, but to a jaw-dropping lack of character. Frankly, it was nice to laugh about it for a change.

I guess they should have replaced the inaction figures with a Coors Light "twins" ad LOL.
