Insult woman - go to jail!
posted by Matt on 10:11 PM December 30th, 2004
Inequality Linucs writes "Will it ever stop? From the Guardian: "The law puts anti-gay and sexist comments on an equal footing with racist or anti-semitic insults, allowing French courts to hand down fines of up to €45,000 (£30,000) and jail sentences of up to 12 months for "defamation or incitement to discrimination, hatred or violence on the grounds of a person's sex or sexual orientation"." Aside from saying goodbye to free speech, I cannot help but wonder: what is a "sexist comment" for the Law? "The feminist group Les Chiennes de Garde, or Guard Bitches, added that it hoped the law would lead to a fall in the number of physical attacks on women "by first outlawing verbal violence"." No, this will not outlaw anti-men advertisement and media bias, but thanks for asking. Maybe we could outlaw any form of speech for men, so everybody would just climb trees, eat fruit and get along? Oog oog!"

Do we know this for sure, or is it just well-reasoned conjecture? Perhaps "men are dolts" jokes will also be banned.

But women are a "minority" and deserve more protection than men (the oppressive "majority"). "Women lie" is a bad joke, but "Men are dolts" is "brave irony" that fights "The Patriarchy".

Should be the case. This is just as stupid as black activists were pushing hate crime legislation here in the U.S. a few years ago, because plenty of blacks commit hate crimes, just like people of European or Asian descent.

French women have chins like rhinos and breath like winos.

If they want respect, they should try going to the moon.

They'll weigh less.

Instead of wasting our time with stupid laws, they should be watching Oprah's show on women with chafed thighs who start forest fires.

Actually it will, since courts are required to enforce laws even-handedly. I don't see how bigoted slurs based on gender are any better than on race or creed; in fact they are worse, since they may involve an element of sexual degradation-- and usually do, in typical cases of misandry. Gender deserves the same protection against slurs as anything else.

Sure it will. I mean, courts in Canada and the US are "required to enforce laws even-handedly," too, and we can certainly see how well it works here.
