A Sense of Helplessness
posted by Matt on 12:35 AM December 20th, 2004
The Media Anonymous User writes "An article of interest appeared at MSNBC today concerning the recent increase in killings of new, expectant mothers. The article quoted Pat Brown, a criminal profiler based in Minneapolis. She said:

'For some men, the situation boils down to one set of unadorned facts: if the woman doesn't want the baby, she can get an abortion. If the guy doesn't want it, he can't do a damn thing about it. He is stuck with a child for the rest of his life, and he's stuck with that woman for the rest of his life. If she goes away the problem goes away.'"

No truer words could have been spoken about the gross inequity in parental choice.

It is PAST TIME to give men the same choice to either accept or forego parenthood until a more appropriate time. The same choice that women have enjoyed for over a quarter of a century since Roe vs. Wade in 1973.

I was pleased to see that paragraph "for some men...." included in the article. Missing was the opposite situation, where the man (notice she's a woman, he's a 'guy') wants the child, but will either have to watch his child being given away for adoption, or raised to hate him.

Also missing were the larger murder rates for men and women of the same age ranges. If pregnant women get murdered at the same rate as non-pregnant women of the same demographic, it's not much of a story. And the whole thing gets a bit more perspective if equivalent men die by violence at a much higher rate.

Criminologiists have known for some time that powerlessness is a huge factor in violent crime. Powerlessness asks for big trouble whether it is a bar fight or even a traffic stop. When people feel powerless they are more likely to respond with violence. Our "reproductive rights" charade where women have choices and men have none is a prescription for trouble since it handcuffs men into positions of powerlessness.

This is not meant to excuse the violence. Just meant to understand that our sexist laws are playing a part in things.

There will always be a small percentage of the population that have very poor impulse control, drug addictions, mental illness, poor judgement, lack of consideration for others etc. Add on top of that a legally forced helplessness and kaboom!

Sounds exactly like my Criminal Justice 101 textbook, Tom. Powerlessness is the reason why the inner-city neighborhoods are so overwhelmed by violence. The people lack any kind of socioeconomic power. They have little if any political influence so what do the people do? They turn to violence such as gang related crimes. In this case it's men without any kind of reproductive rights.

Though malicious violence is NEVER justified, it is important to know that when people do feel helpless and trapped within a system that clearly has no regard for their civil rights/liberties, they will unfortunately respond in such a horrific manner.

It's an unfortunate case of animal instincts getting the better of human judgment and rationalism.

Violence is NEVER justified, but NEITHER is injustice and a blatant disregard for the rights and civil liberties of half the population whose reproductive rights and equal rights period are LONG over due. I enjoy my reproductive rights, it's PAST time that men do to, and stop living in a society where only those with XX chromosomes can have all the freedoms and reproductive rights in the world.

Except when men do it.

Violence is considered an outgrowth of powerlessness for every group on earth except men (for whom it is the opposite). How often have we been told that violence is an expression of male power?

Yet again feminists invert the real world to suit their needs.
