Misandric Advertising
posted by Adam on 02:43 PM October 24th, 2004
The Media Anonymous User writes "MassMutual is engaged in misandric advertising. One of the television commericials show the need to save for a girl who overcomes the glass ceiling to be a success. The other television commerical shows the need to save for a "deadbeat" son who never leaves home. Go to the MassMutual website and let them know how you feel about their misandry."

This email that I sent to GEICO should explain my complaint:

To the people in charge of advertising at GEICO:

I have recently heard the following quote from one of your radio commercials:

"After years of marriage your husband still leaves the seat up. Marriage satisfaction rating minus 2%."

I'm sure that this ad was meant to be humorous. It wasn't for me. I have been advocating for men's issues for the past few years, and find this petty cliché to be annoying and disrespectful to men. Do these types of anti-male ads ever end?

It should be brought to your attention that anti-male ads such as these are being criticized on several websites (which are viewed by thousands of people each day). Men have become tired of negative portrayals of males in the media, and even some women are starting to speak out against this trend.

It is strongly recommended that you find an alternative approach to advertising GEICO (which is not insulting to men) before you cause yourself to lose a lot of business. Companies cannot afford to alienate half the population, particularly during a time of economic uncertainty. Also, I am currently a GEICO policy holder, but plan to switch my car insurance company if this ad isn't retracted.

I know that there are bigger issues going on right now, such as insurance for those whose properties were damaged by the hurricanes in Florida and Alabama. However, consider that many of the rescue workers in these areas are men who could do without being insulted with commercials like this.

Sincerely,

Steven G. Van Valkenburg

I had sent that email to GEICO a month ago, and was informed by someone that the commercial is still active (at least it was in the past couple of weeks). I followed up with a phone call to GEICO, but I'm not sure if anything was done with that.

Anyway, I went ahead and looked into other auto insurance for when my policy needs renewal, which is soon. I found that Amica Insurance is rated much higher in customer satisfaction by Consumer Reports (it's at the top along with USAA, but the latter is for the military). This was corroborated by a search of epinions.com. I contacted Amica and a few other companies online for some quotes, and found that Amica would actually save me a few hundred dollars a year over the lower rated GEICO anyway. So I gave them a call and switched to Amica.

Perhaps GEICO did actually remove the stupid radio commercial, but it's hard to say, and their ad did prompt me to look for a better company. Although I could have looked into Progressive Insurance as an alternative (just kidding).

[Note to moderators: I had originally submitted a post about the GEICO commercial, but it was never put in the board and remains in the queue. It can be removed now.]

Although this might sound stupid to the educated person, my statement is this: I find it curious that today's women...who demand equality on every level, yet in truth, think of themselves as superior in every way...can't seem to manage to PUT THE FUCKING LID DOWN before they take a squat. Is it so hard? Is it SO demeaning? Does it require so much effort to look BEFORE they sit down?
How do you do that anyway? I have put the lid down before I take a shit...and I leave the lid up all the time. I haven't thrown my shoulder out yet...
I mean, my problem with women today is that they don't put the damn UP when THEY'RE done. I find it degrading and invalidating to me as a man. Come to think of it...I find it discriminating to me as a man, that all homes don't come automatically equipt with a stand-up urinal. And I think we should talk seriously about a nationwide lawsuit on behalf of all men, against the home-building contractors of America.(Just think 'Sam Kinison' as you ponder this...

Saw a TV programme a few months ago, wherein a woman was explaining that for Hygiene purposes, ( to quickly kill off any germs) a toilet seat should be left in the UP position. Putting the seat down, seemingly, helps the germs breed ! ! !

I remember hearing that somewhere, as well.
The reason being is that the germs thrive better in moisture. With the lid down the moisture on the toilet bowl has a harder time evaporating, hence more germs.
With the lid UP, you get more evaporation, hence fewer germs.
But try explaining that to a fembot.
You and I would be taken more siriously if we went camping and you dressed up as Oscar Wild and I sang Noel Coward songs.

I'll tell ya, Masculiste, this has struck me since the very first time I heard the absurd objection about not putting the toilet seat down. I've always been somewhat inclined to say something along the lines of "Gee. I learned before the age of three to check to see if the seat was down at night." Frankly, I've just felt that this isn't a battle that I'm going to fight. I've got cats, and they're not too bright. They're sweet, but dumb. So I'd put the seat down for them alone. No need to have them jumping in and out of the toilet in the middle of the night and charging across my face in raw terror.

Also, maybe (as someone else posted) germs breed more in a closed toilet, but for aesthetic reasons I prefer to have the seat down. And as for germs, I clean the toilet somewhat regularly. I'm not real finicky, but I have my standards, and gross toilets don't fit into them.

Also, I'll point out that my wife (with whom I have a very good relationship) puts the car's driver's seat all the way back when she gets out. It makes it a lot easier for me to get in, if I'm the next driver. She started doing this on her own, with no suggestion from me. (Probably gives some idea of why she and I have a good relationship.)

But, of course, that's just me. Your point is well made and well taken. It's absurd that women, at the age of thirty or forty or older and still dunking their butts at night because they can't figure out how to check if a seat is up or down.

Maybe my meaning was obvious, but I wrote that poorly. I was referring not just to the seat, but to the seat and the toilet cover.

An attack on the company that buys the ad is a good thing. BUT WHAT IS MORE VITALLY IMPORTANT TO STOP THE TREND IS TO FIND OUT THE NAMES OF THE EMPLOYEES OF THE AD AGENCY, MAKE AN ENEMY LIST AND RUIN THEIR CAREERS.TAKE NO PRISONERS!!!!

The company was "sold"the ad concept by asholes like the "Public Relations"graduates at Mount Saint Vincent...THEY are the real problem. Go after the pushers more so than the duped junkies.

I'm surprised the topic of paying more for insurance, due to the simple additional driving hazard of having a penis, hasn't been brought up.

I would think that is more important than a joke in poor taste :)
