SPIKE TV
posted by Matt on 02:14 PM September 6th, 2004
The Media tonysprout writes "Spike TV claims it is the first network for men. I'm a man, and I don't watch it. I've sent email (via an online contact form at here) asking them to consider doing a show advocating men's rights. We NEED this show. You NEED to contact them and ask for the same thing. As a channel for men, they continue to reinforce the negative stereotypes of masculinity with shows like "Stripperella"."

It wouldn't surprise me if the important editorial posts in the station are actually held by feminist women, as is the case with many so-called mens magazines.

You mean like "Men`s Health" magazine?Where you sit down and read it expecting to read about...well...men`s health and all it is is a bunch of "How To Please Your Woman In Bed" type articles?

I wouldn't be at all surprised if you were right - all the more reason for men to lobby the station. Push for real men's issues to be dealt with, instead of programs which insult our intelligence.

Spike TV may not be everyone’s idea of what a channel for men should be. I see a lot that I don’t like but in all fairness we need to recognize that the first thing a channel for men has to do is survive in the marketplace.

Despite it’s shortcomings SpikeTV may be our best opportunity to be heard. Face it, at this point in time men's rights advocates are not exactly a major force in the media. Requests for a men’s rights show will probably be taken more seriously at Spike than at any other network. I suspect that the main obstacle at Spike is to convince them that people would actually watch such a show. Most networks would laugh at the idea - then run in the other direction - they know their audience. Their viewers are primarily female and programming reflects it. Oprah’s show exists because LOTS of consumers watch it.

We can have influence by asking for what we want, criticizing the bad, and complimenting the good. So, has everyone sent Spike positive feedback on their men’s health campaign?

I tried the link to contact 'Spike TV', but all I got was that annoying: "404 NOT FOUND" thing.
I HATE that.
