Canadian divorce rate declines at joint custody
posted by Adam on 02:16 PM May 6th, 2004
Divorce Anonymous User writes "Its kind of sad that 35,000 children were involved in divorces in 2002, but the good news is that Dads are way more involved with their kids now. "Fewer than half of the dependents were put in custody of the wife in 2002. Of 35,000 dependents for whom custody was awarded by the courts, 49.5 per cent went to the wife. About 42 per cent of dependents were put into joint custody. In 1988, custody for 75 per cent of dependents was granted to the wife in divorce proceedings." Article is here"

IF 49.5 per cent went to the wife. (Sole custody)
and 42 per cent went into JOINT custody.
wouldn't that mean that percent that went to husbands (Sole custody) was zero?

It's very misleading for them to say less than half went to the wife. When the wife didn't get full custody she still got joint custody. Men only got joint custody or zip! The play was to make it sound like women were still losing out.

True, and that 42% which is joint custody you can bet is 100% mother primary physical custody. Which leaves 9.5% for father (or other) sole custody. Joint legal (without physical) custody is pretty much a sop given to fathers when the break-up is fairly amicable.

The organization called "chidfind" has all but petered out in Canada as a result of this trend. The propaganda was that stranger male monster child molesters were taking these children and the public was outraged. Actually this was true in only a very few cases and children abducted in such circumstances are generally dead within 24 hours unless they are kidnapped by a childless woman who is willing to steal someone else's child. The vast majority of the missing children were abducted by non-custodial parents and grand parents. Public sympathy plummetted when this became known and Canadian courts became less and less willing to prosecute people for "kidnapping" their own flesh and blood.

Good news.
JPC is really the way to go. To me, you should have to petition a court to NOT have joint custody. JPC should be the default.
