NH Legislature Passes College Costs Bill
posted by Scott on Thursday January 08, @09:58AM
from the news dept.
News On January 7, 2004, the NH Senate passed HB 299. This bill removes judicial discretion to order a divorced parent to contribute to an adult child's college expenses. At least two fathers in NH have been jailed for not being able to pay their children's college tuition. You can read about one man's story here. Once the bill is signed by the governor, this should never happen again. This bill is a huge win for us in returning common sense to the child support system. Married parents aren't required by law to pay their children's college expenses, and divorced parents should not be treated differently.

As you can see from both links above, Rep. David Bickford was quoted in the article about the man who was jailed and was the primary sponsor of HB 299.

For people who want to do something like this in their own states, I can't emphasise enough how important it is to make friends in the legislature. David has sponsored a number of father's rights bills and the men's commission legislation. While not everything has passed, some bills have, and most importantly, other legislators are finally starting to recognize "those father's rights people" as a constituency that they need to pay attention to.

So, learn about your state's political system and get involved! It takes time, but this is one of the most satisfying ways of getting real results and improving the lives of men.

This is a NH bill being voted on now. This bill removes the court's discretion to order child support, or payment of educational expenses, for adult children. This Bill is the sister of HB 299 which already passed Jan. 7th and was signed into law Feb 2nd by the governor. Please call the below committee members to HELP get this bill passed. Thanks.

The bill to end child support is HB 1312. "Unless the court or other body empowered by law to issue and modify support orders specifies differently" must be removed from the statute to end child support for adult children in college.

We need to call representatives of the House Child and Family Law Committee and ask them to pass it. The committee plans on voting on it Feb. 10, 2004. The members are as follows:

Score one for Fathers.

Hey Scott, tell David Bickford that he has the heartfelt thanks of men out there. Hell, use me as an example: I aint in NH, I aint got kids, I aint divorced, but I DO think his efforts are downright heroic. Bravo and kudos to him (am I actually cheering on a politician? Where are my meds?)

Does the bill cover not having to pay child support if the child lives at home with the parent and commutes to college? In the past I understood that if the child lived with a parent while going to college the non-custodial parent still had to keep paying support throughout college?
