Concord Monitor Prints Letters From Men's Activists

News It is with great pleasure and gratitude that I have learned that the editor of the Concord Monitor was overwhelmed with letters this weekend in response to his recent editorial on the NH Commission on the Status of Men and a male-bashing letter that were printed late last week. Five responses were printed on these pages: one, two. Pat yourselves on the back, folks! You did some excellent work and it was a great show of unity in support of the NH Men's Commission.

While I'm thankful my letter was printed, I was a bit surprised (or maybe not surprised, just disappointed) that what I wrote regarding the NH Coalition Against DV was removed "for brevity", I imagine.

Again, I'm very thankful for the outpouring of letters from MANN readers. The support was very timely and desperately needed.

Tom! I am so glad they published that letter on men's pain. I loved it, and I think it will go a long way towards making people rethink their assumptions.
Scott, even if they did shorten it, I think it made a lot of impact. Great job you guys!

Thanks Jen. Like Scott I was sad to see some of it "shortened." They left out the part where I called their paper sexist. ;>) In all fairness they did edit in a way that maintained the original meaning. Those were some nice letters!

Even though my letter wasn't published, I am thrilled the views of the men's movement were so openly expressed. And very well expressed. This a is a nice moment for us.

I agree. Mine wasn't published either but those that were did a great job. It really helps when people pitch in like this. Thanks!

That's exactly right. I try to emphasize that in L.A. all the time. Every letter that gets sent in helps increase the chances of someone's letter printing that takes that position, and it even increases the number that are likely to print, since newspapers usually consider the number who wrote in as a factor. That's why it's so important that alot of people write.

Nice job everyone!

FEEDING THE MEDIA BEAST, by Mark Mathis, Purdue Publishers (An easy recipe for great publicity)

I am presently reading the above book but I must confess that I didn't get my letter sent in to the Concord. I've sent letters to editors for other things in the past, but just failed to get it done this time around. WRITING REQUIRES EFFORT. For some of us to sit down and hammer out a letter is like pulling teeth. I apologize and would blame my busy schedule except I have found the time to post to this site and could have taken some of that leisure time to have gotten a letter in to the editor of the Concord.

Truth be told, Mensactivism fills a certain void of fellowship on these issues, that just aren't satisfied by sending a letter off that I feel has no chance of getting in the paper. It is gratifying to write on Mensactivism about issues that bug the heck out of me, and I really enjoy the interaction on this site. I have never had a letter I've written published in a newspaper.

All that being said, this serves to point out my weakness (and others) to step up to the plate when needed. I confess, and am going to keep working on that short coming.

I've been reading this book (after much searching for a good one on this topic) and am 89 pages into the 293 page book. With what I have read so far, I highly recommend it. It is entitled, "FEEDING THE MEDIA BEAST, (an easy recipe to great publicity)" and you can find it on Amazon or Borders or your favorite used books place. I recommended reading the reviews on Amazon if interested to better understand what this book is about and how it could help you in this kind of situation.

I have already learned where I have missed opportunities in the past, and just plain screwed up other opportunities by not understanding the nature of Journalism, and how it feeds on a diet of what it perceives as news. I also see how I did do something right in one interview that got printed.

Like a suit that's baggy in the pants or droops at the shoulders, or is too big in the waist, news needs to be tailored (edited) to fit the parameters of newscasters formulas, or they have trouble using it.

Newscasters, like all humans on a busy schedule, prefer it when a news source makes it easy for them to get a good story put together.

In closing, congratulations to the people who made the print, and the people who didn't, but pushed their letters in, and made this a topic of public interest. To those of you who didn't get a letter in (like me) I recommend this book. It will help you to step up to the plate and take a swing at some point in the future. Don't be too hard on yourself if you missed this chance to participate. Watching the fine people who succeeded on this is a good lesson in how to approach the media. Together we can grow, and have future badly needed successes. By having more coverage in the media it brings men's issues to public attention, draws out other concerned individuals, and puts pressure on our elected representatives to pay attention to the mountain of men's issues they have been neglecting so badly for so long.

Sincerely, Ray
