Advertising and Gender

The Media tparker writes "The Gender Ads Project attempts to categorize advertisments in various ways to indicate how they relate to gender. The have over 1600 ads categorized, and accept email comments (and maybe new ads?) Maybe the site could use some more examples of misandrist ads, since they seem to be focused misogyny at the moment."

I looked under the violence on male section and there are only 4 ads. There are dozens of violence on female ads. Now it looks to me like they are only using stills, and most of the violence I have seen has been television or film. Now I also noticed that most of these ads seem to be European. Any thoughts? Jen

pretty much. So why not send in some comments and male-bashing ads and call them on their bullshit?

Agreed. The gentleman in question has a PhD. He doesn't say in what, but I'm assuming sociology or some such claptrap.

Apart from the fawning, feminist tone of the site, there is the horrible English:

"I was surprised to see so many of the flyers defaced on my campus, but I ultimately realized that our society has a long way to go to achieve a meaningful and critical existence."

[I have no idea what a "meaninful and critical existence" is, and I think that neither does Dr. Lukas.]

"I hope that the individuals who took the time to deface the flyers will attempt to educate themselves in whatever ways possible."

[The usualy condescending attitude that opposition = lack of education. "If someone doesn't think as I do, it must be because they're not as well educated as I am."]

The sad state of reality that is our consumer culture also produces numerous other representations of gender that are just as troubling as those reflected in the Project.

[The "sad state of reality"?!? Hasten thee back to English 101! Forthwith!]

However, after holding back the urge to barf over the tortured English, I agree that it would be worthwhile to send this guy some anti-male ads to see if he expands his categories. For example, he has a category for Female=Stupid. Now it can't be that hard to find ads in America that feature Male=Stupid. In fact, I'm sure that they vastly outnumber his current Female=Stupid collection.

However, I agree that most examples of anti-male advertising are on television. I'll look through my wife's "ladies' magazines" to see what I can find in print.

In the end, I doubt that Dr. Lukas will expand his anti-male section too much. If he is a professor of Sociology then his continued success within his department depends upon his ability to churn out feminist propaganda.

Wow! Women that use their sexuality to manipulate and control men is a form of "male" power and control. I never noticed that. Much like the way a person that has been addicted to crack/heroine has "power" over the drug-pusher that they must pay to get their addiction satiated. *roll eyes*

What a dumb site.
