Men's Health Around the world, June 9-15, 2003 is being celebrated as International Men's Health Week (IMHW).   Check this page, and your local public health department or ministry for information about local events planned for this week.  Even if there are no local events in which you can participate, try making one personal resolution this week that will help you improve your health.  Best wishes for a great, healthy week!

Still unsure of need for Men's Health initiative (Score:1)

The more I read about Men's Health initiatives, the more it seems that all we'll accomplish is mirroring the bloated Women's Health industry. Then we men can start worrying about are large stomachs, our psychic health, our empowerment, etc. I think it's a trap.

To be sure, men have problems. Too many murder victims. Too many suicides. Too many work place accidents. Too much divorce. Too many automobile accidents. Too little recognition. Et cetera.

But do we really need to behave like women to address these problems? Can anything be accomplished by a world-wide organization? National? State? County? City?

If you are concerned about your health, go see a doctor. If you are concerned about the health of your best friend, or your father, brother, or son, aske him to see a doctor. But it should end there. (Exception: charitable programs to provide outreach to destitute men might be a good idea.) Constructing a gigantic, gender-oriented health industry to pander to all men does not seem to be the right path.

This is the second topic related to men's issues that Newsweek has covered in the last few weeks. The first was the gender gap in education a couple weeks ago, which was one of the cover stories. Plus, the articles seem to be presented in a very male-friendly manner, which is refreshing to say the least. Some good seems to be emanating from Newsweek lately... Perhaps a few letters of appreciation are in order?
