TV for Men? Maybe

The Media LeMorteMark writes "I just learned that the cable station TNN, will become SpikeTV. It appears they are trying to market this as "TV for Men". I am looking forward to seeing this channel but when I checked out the website, it looked more like a station for reruns of cancelled shows than a "Lifetime for men". Still its a step in the right direction. They should have a couple of shows that focus on men's news and politics. Maybe a news program anchored by Glenn Sacks or a TV version of "families under siege". I would be more interested in that kind of stuff than just seeing more stereotypes of guys belching and watching football. Here's the website: Spike Tv"

I went to the website and the first page smacked me in the face - all the men were represented as devils complete with horns and arrowhead-ended tails. At first glance, it looks like an entire network designed around that bucket of puke "The Man Show".

none for me, thanks.

It might not be that they are using it to degrade men. It might be that they are making fun of the notion that men are evil. (The message that feminism promotes.) Perhaps they're not trying to offend men, perhaps they're poking fun at those people who think that men are evil? I'm just guessing there.

I'll have to tune in and watch some to make a certain judgement.

I would agree with you that the appallingly offensive "The Man Show" is indeed just what you've said it is -- a bucket of puke -- but I see no need to denigrate puke in such a manner.

Seriously, though, thanks.

Really, if there is a program more gleefully disrespectful of men than the utter crapola know as "The Man Show", I'd love to know what it is. God help us if this so-called "Spike TV" proves to be more of the same.

I have to disagree. I see The Man Show as a positive. It always struck me and men "owning" the men-are-pigs stereotype. A man who has watched and laughed at that is so much less likely to cringe at feminine shaming tactics and hurry to prove that he's not-a-pig. It's a step away from dependence on feminine validation.

Sure, it's adolescent and silly but men don't have to apologize for either of those traits. I think it's paving the way for more mature, unapologetic portrayals of men.

They ARE bringing back Ren and Stimpy, after all. And as long as it doesn't become one big men steryotype(Like most of you other guys are fearing), I'll put up with it. After all, it's a step in the right direction.

...but considering the fact that I don't like any of the current men's mags (GQ, Esquire) or the current moron's mags (FHM, Stuff, Maxim) I doubt I'll like this. All of the above seem to in their own way make very clear to the reader that men in some way are truly not worthy of women.

I agree that this may, however, be a step in the right direction. An ad I Saw a few months ago said it will be "unapoligetically male" which can be a good thing if it's true. We shouldn't have to apologize. But like many of you fear, I hope that doesn't mean a belching and farting network.

The fact of the matter is that women and the men who fear women's wrath won't stand for any portrayal of men that isn't without flaw. You'll never see a male depiction or character as intelligent, attractive, strong, socially concious and able to get what he wants from relationships with women without lowering himself in some way. It's age-old but many people still fell that men by their nature must grovel before women.

If this network actually has a talk show aimed at REAL MEN'S ISSUES (not the crap from "The Other Half") I will gladly eat my words of skepticism and will likely call hell to see if it has frozen over.

Don't you people ever wonder why the stereotype is continual in the media?

I mean, with all those shows, and all those ideas and hundreds and hundreds of writers and yet they belch out the same character traights for every man, woman and child.

Ya, 997 channels and there's nothing on. Question the media, question their source and question thier motivation for the images they bombard us with.

It ceases to be art when it becomes a mold producing the same ideas with slightly different scenarios, but all with the same outcome. Then it just becomes propaganda.

Is it possible they are conditioning us for preset reactions? To steer us in the direction that suits their interests? How deep do their interests go?

They can create fear, suspician and an entire false reality.

Its long past time we questioned the media.

They can convince women they should fight to eradicate our individual rights and that its even in their best interest.

They can convince men that manhood is all about eating and farting.

They can create a gender war if they want, if its in their best interest.

I think any "mens programmes" or "mens magazines" are better than none. Sure, they may be initially controlled by the feminists and ,as such, may be damaging to the mens movement. However, over time, they will evolve into media for discussion of real mens issues. "Womens magazines" of the 1950's were gradually taken over by the feminists and eventually played an important role in the dissemination of feminazism.

I submitted this:

If any station is truly interested in drawing me back into watching TV they need to be just about diametrically opposed to the programming standards that permeate TV today.

No "Men as idiots and women as perfect" (the standard recipe for todays sit-com) The television shows that capture my interest are ones where I can empathize with characters, and I have NOTHING in common with the fools men are characterized as in virtually ALL evening programming today.

Programming that interests men. The world was built on Technology and innovation, not on feelings and intuition. Produce shows about differing tech. industries (automotive, computing, high end audio, home improvement...) and no apoligies.

Politics from a mens perspective, whats the feminist lobby up to, how are our boys doing in school, why is our family court system such a failure and how can we fix it. Why mens health is an issue that we all need to take more interest in. You will have a invaluable platform from which to draw attention to the REAL problems facing men today... but again... no "touchy feely" human interest crap, give us the data and propose solutions. Sure you'll piss off a bunch of feminists, but they're pissed off already, so you won't be changing much.

No Sports, sports, and MORE sports. I'm a guy... I DON'T watch sports on TV. Sure some sports presentations would be fine, reflecting that many guys are fanatics... but if it's all sports I won't be around.

No brain cell killing reality shows. Whoever thought up that idea should be taken out and SHOT.

Honestly I think you guys have a tough road in front of you. Most guys WORK and simply don't have much free time to blow watching TV, theres' a good reason why the vast majority of TV programming today is female oriented... but it certainly wouldn't be PC to say so.

but given the comments after I submitted, we're screwed.

"There just are not enough TV shows for video gamers.. we wanna see previews, reviews and video game action.. you could really build on this considering all the online gaming being done these days.. contests and such.. get a couple of playmates to host it and you got a huge hit.. PLEASE!!!"

"Wanted to tell you that it's a great idea...Spike TV. I think that if you took the magazines mens health, maxim, stuff, and muscle and fitness, mix it with wrestling, sprint cars, monster trucks, motorcycle, rugby, arena football, most extreme challenge, dukes of hazard, bull riding, extreme sports, and steven segal bruce lee, chuck norris, van dam, and you animation block youll be sure to have the demogpraphic you want... oh with the addition of alot of skin!!!! anything with women in little or no clothing. make sure to have a show with working out for men...types of exercises trend supplements.....and a gadgets type show with the newest stereo tv bikes sports equipment...and maybe worlds strongest man thrown in on the side....GO TO IT!!!!"

-shows that make men laugh...like the man show on comedy central, jackass on MTV

"Video-games and technology shows are a must! Also along with all the action movies id like to see the video game movies as well, such a Street Fighter, Double Dragon, and Mortal Kombat. I dunno why but those shows are ALWAYS watchable for people who grew up playing them. Most Extreme Elimination Challenge is awesome!"
-Martin from KY

"Create a show like mtv cribs....only about old muscle cars and custom street rods...low riders....with hot women in bikinis as the hosts.....what more could one ask for....cars and women...one show....cool....."

"You have to show women in bathing suits. And not just animation. I'm talking the real thing. You also have to show action. Like James Bond. Show the movies with Sean Connery. Those are the best. Personally, I would like to see some music videos. All kinds of music. Not just one specific type. Well, these are my comments on what you should put on your new station."
-Micah from TN

"I would like to see the "Trek Uncut" series continued. I have really enjoyed seeing my favorite ST:TNG episodes in their entirety, and I think you've done an excellent job of picking both the themes, and the particular shows that represent them. Thank you for considering my opinion. I'll be watching."
-Johnny from TX

"Personally, I'd love to see loads of anime. It's increasing in popularity, and a lot of it is very action-oriented. I think it has a wide appeal."
-Jordan from AZ

"I really hope this is really the first network for men. I'm sick of Martha Stewert and opera. I look fowerd to some of the shows you are going to have. But if you can do me a big favor and put my all time favorite show on. A little show called "BEAVIS AND BUTTHEAD" it would make this man's life a lot better."
-Hugo from CA

"You guys need a reality show like "The Real World" that has less of the girly drama and more funny stupidity. You need to find a bunch of crazy, drunken, jackass underachievers to film going about their daily college "animal house" style lives."
-Ryan from KY

I HOPE they're cherry picking input that aligns with their (I assume already determined) programming strategy, and that guys really AREN'T this shallow (this reads like a bunch of over-sexed teenagers). In either case it doesn't bode well.
