Mothers More Likely to Marry Fathers of Sons

from the Fatherhood dept.
Fatherhood radikal writes "Lundberg and Rose, two profs from University of Washington, conclude that mothers having sons are more likely to marry the father than when they have daughters. Most interesting are their speculations about why this is so, particularly Lundberg's. http://www.eurekalert.org/pub_releases/2003-05/uow -wma050503.php"

I submit one factor for fathers not marrying mothers with daughters is the danger of being falsely accused, yet successfully stigmatized and/or penalized, for being a pedophile. After all, in these times (based on personal witness) the mother or daughter will ALWAYS be believed

I can only imagine how this will be used by feminists if they use it. It will be warped into proof that men won't marry women with girls because men only care about there own kind. I can also see with the comment about unmarried women and there girls living in poverty to be a great man-bashing tool and a tool to get more money for welfare moms.

and it seemed fairly unobjectionable for a report written by two young female academics at the beginning of the 21st century. It did gratuitously suggest that men might be less likely to marry single women with daughters because of men's gender bias.

In my opinion the most likely explanation is that women are much more likely to think they will need male help with dealing with a boy child. Fear of sexual abuse may also contribute to their not wanting to marry if they have a daughter.

The effect was much stronger for marriage to the natural father than for marriage to a step-father.
