MANN Chat: Do We Need an Office of Men's Health?

Announcements Steve writes "I will host this week's MANN chat, Wednesday night (10/30), starting at 9:30 PM Eastern Time, at the usual location. The topic for this chat will be 'Do we need an Office of Men's Health?'  The Men's Health Act of 2001 would create an Office of Men's Health within the Department of Health and Human Services.  However, that bill is languishing in Congress, while men continue to suffer from the concerns the bill seeks to address.  Some men say we need an Office of Men's Health to promote men's health and well-being.  Other men say such an office would merely create bigger government and more bureaucracy, and would not produce any tangible benefits for men.  What do you say?  Join us at this week's MANN chat to share your views on the proposed Office of Men's Health or men's health issues generally.  Invite a friend to accompany you to the chat; he'll thank you for it!"

If there's one for women, we need one for men (Score:0)

Even those who say it would just create more "government and bureaucracy" must admit that, with 7 offices of women's health and no offices of men's health, women's health is SNAGGING the existing federal funds. Once we create an office of men's health we can help balance that out. AND, since domestic violence is a public health issue, eventually we would have a federal office addressing male victims of DV.

No matter what position one takes on big or small government, if there is an office of women's health then there should be an office of men's health. And we're not going to be dismantling the office of women's health anytime soon.

Yes. The overwheling lack of response to this simple question underscores how little attention men pay to their health.

Our societal conditioning, that men are disposable, is a deeply reinforced perception in women and men in America.

Unfortunately, the overall statistics for death, disease and injury strongly support the above statements.

When I called my Senator (Sen Barbara Mikulski D- MD) to ask that she support an Office for Men's Health I was told that the whole of NIH is an office of men's health. This is the sort of arrogance and insensitivity we are up against. They know that if they say things like this about men they will not be held accountable in the same way they would if they made the same statement about women or blacks.

We have a lot of work to do but it is do-able.
