Boys/Young Men James Soucy writes "The following is a letter I sent by both snail and e-mail in reply to Cheddah's submission concerning the boy-bashing products sold at Ames department stores. I strongly urge all those who partake of this website and others like it to do likewise whenever such an injustice occurs for the following reason: IT WORKS. There really is strength in numbers, guys. So SPEAK UP and be heard! It took me a whole of two minutes to compose and send this response, and I'm only getting faster with each one. You can too. Happy Holidays to all!" Click Read More to view James' letter, and feel free to post your own in the comments section of this story and the previous Ames one.

Chairman and Chief Executive Officer
Ames Department Stores, Inc.

Dear Mr. Ettore:

It was on the Mensactivism.org website that I was informed that Ames Department stores are selling from vending machines stickers which state the following:

  • Boys are Aliens
  • Boys are brainless
  • Boys lie
  • Not interested (in boys)
  • Boys cheat
  • I make boys cry
  • Boys are weird

I was stunned that any business would partake of such malice—for malice it is—toward children ( of either gender ). I do not believe for a minute that Ames would sell a similar product denigrating girls, even if such existed, which it certainly doesn’t. Living in the Northeast, I have made considerable purchases from Ames Stores; however, given this showcase of blatant animosity towards children, and boys in particular, I will not only be taking my business elsewhere in the future - I will be urging all others to do the same.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at anytime.

Thank you very much.

James E. Soucy

I guess I'll post this here, because it may be read the most in this thread.

Throughout history there have been countless hate movements. Though many people have suffered because of them, all of these movements have ultimately been overcome. And we stumble forward. Our egalitarian struggle will be long and hard, but we will win this war.

Whether we're celebrating Christmas, Hanukkah, the end of Ramadan, the solstice or anything else, let's keep faith in our future.

Peace.

I have not seen the offending Southwest Airlines ad or the offending Prestone anti-freeze ad this week. I hope I do not in the future. Even if I don't, I'm not sure we can attribute that to any complaints mande by us, but even so, it would appear that the effect is showing success.

On Sunday night, I went to the local Ames store, around the corner from my home, and confronted the manager regarding the machines. We found the machine, but it did not have the offending sticker in it. I did have one that was somewhat less offensive, carrying some of the same themes. He blew me off, though two days before Christmas, I'm sure he had more immediate problems to address. He did tell me that the store did not own or stock the machines, though he did concede that Ames probably received a fee for placing the machines. This particular machine had a phone number on it: 215-639-8101. I've not called yet, but I intend to tomorrow, durng normal business hours.
