The Disturbing Truth About Child Support Collections
posted by Scott on Sunday December 23, @11:46AM

News Mike Geanoulis from the NCFC-NH group wrote an excellent editorial which was printed in Foster's Daily Democrat. Mike's article exposes the bureaucratic inefficiency of the child support collection system, and that despite news reports claiming that the agency is collecting more and more money, the percentage collected per case is actually staying the same, or getting worse. This combined with the fact that child support collection is inextricably linked with a father's access to his children, suggests that the system is doing nothing to help children and families in its current state, and is in need of reform.

Excellent article.

I would add that the collection of child support, from my limited and biased perspective, seems to be heavily sexist and prejudiced. The men I have known have been hounded and threatened by agencies. I have twice seen a man's wages held and pilfered in order to satisfy the courts demands for payment. These were both in circumstances where his visitation was being illegally prevented and a number of aspects were highly suspect. OTOH I have seen two men who were due child support from their ex-wives and in both cases the child support remained mostly UNPAID nor did the authorities DO ANYTHING. They claimed constantly that they were about to force her to pay...but over years (more than ten!) they never did a thing. I was pissed off then and continue to be angry about the vast difference in treatment. Perhaps I have a limited sample...but speaking from my sample men are getting screwed!
