Domestic Violence Art Attacks Men

Domestic Violence I'm waaaay behind in posting news stories, and I apologize for that. Several people, including frank h, stevenpauljones, Steve , and Acksiom sent in this story or ones similar to it. The article describes an art exhibit at the Boulder Public Library sponsored by a local domestic violence shelter, which features, "21 ceramic . . . ummm . . . men's appendages, which are displayed on a clothesline in the library. It's entitled "Hung out to dry."" The exhibit is meant to say something about domestic violence and gender, and you can guess it's not particularly positive. Steve suggested that we contact the newspaper and I think it's a good idea.

The most horrible part of that story is that mother having to console her son by telling him a lie... telling him that the penises are corn cobs. Deep down, the tyke knows it's not true. He sees what's there, and he knows it's aimed at his kind.

This is where the age at which seeds are sown. And he's just now beginning to awaken to the fact that the world hates him because he has a penis.

"The whole point of the exhibit is to make people think about domestic violence..."

So, um, apparently, the 'point' is that there is a link of some sort between penises and domestic violence. And by hanging penises "out to dry", you might end domestic violence. Very subtle.

"Men find this disturbing, but women find it amusing..."

Translation: Those who are more likely to be guilty of the crime in question by virtue of their possession of the featured "appendage" are naturally uncomfortable in the face of an indictment - while those who are more likely to be victims of the crime in question by virtue of their not having the featured "appendage" (and are thus morally superior in their judgment of the issue by virtue of being in that position) are giving the exhibit the go-ahead by deeming it merely "amusing". And the public knows whose opinion it should attribute more credibility to.

My heart goes out to that little boy, as well.

The lead to this article suggests contacting the Denver Post/Rocky Mountain News. That is a good idea, since that is the largest newspaper in Denver, the largest city and capital of Colorado. Please also contact Boulder's main newspaper, The Daily Camera.

Colleen Conant, executive editor and publisher of the Camera, can be reached at conantc@thedailycamera.com.

This exhibit is clearly a celebration of violent sexual assault against and mutilation of males. When I saw it, I was more disgusted than I had ever been at the vile evil called feminism. Karen Ripley, director of cultural programs for the Boulder Public Library, should be summarily fired. If she isn't fired, then the library director, Marcelee Gralapp, 303-441-3106, should be fired. Perhaps Ms. Gralapp should be summarily fired as well; she is, after all, the library director.

When contacting the newspapers, please mention some of the statistics about domestic violence by women against men and the fact that women commit the overwhelming majority of child murders and when women murder a child they are twice as likely to murder a little boy as they are to murder a girl.

While my heart also goes out to the little boy who was mentioned in the article, everyone should know that one enters and passes through this exhibit upon using one of two main entrances to this very popular library. I can assure you that this outrage has been seen by hundreds, perhaps thousands, of little girls and boys.

How long will it take for the majority of men to realize that feminists truly are as evil as Adolf Hitler?

Thanks, Thomas. And don't forget the fact that the battery and murder rate among lesbians is about the same as it is among heterosexual couples. Where is the compassion for women who are abused by other women? That would require acknowledging the existence of abusive women.

i wonder if females would find it amusing if two male library administrators hung a series of severed breasts across the room, and called it "cure for mad cow disease"?

kristalnacht is fully appropriate -- but these folks don't even feel the need to wait for night-time to hide their sick butchery

they probably got a grant for it, too

Collins:

Speaking of couples... There are a number of paintings in this exhibit. In only one work is a heterosexual couple depicted in a good light. The painting shows a white woman with a man of color. A white man would, of course, never be depicted in a good light in such a fascist display.

I am very used to feminists being utterly hateful, evil liars, but I must say even I was taken aback by this atrocity.

If this was in any public library near where I live, I would grab a chair, and pull it down.

I'm not into censorship, but hanging castrated penises above young childrens heads in effigy of how "violent men are" in a LIBRARY is obscene, in bad taste and reveals the sexist self serving nature of Domestic violence clinics.

Anyone in CO willing to do the right thing?

I am not willing, at this point, to go to jail over this, but I am trying to organize people in protest. This situation is starting to get a fair amount of press here in Boulder Country; men are pretty outraged. I'm going to a party tonight; it will be interesting to see if this matter is discussed. (It might not be in part because it's a French party.)

Please, please, please: Write to the Boulder Daily Camera. Demand that Karen Ripley, director of cultural programs for the Boulder Public Library, be fired for this monstrous act. You might also demand that the library director, Marcelee Gralapp, also be fired. This is far too extreme for a slap on the hand to be appropriate. You might also mention where you are writing from, especially if you are from another country, to demonstrate the extent of the outrage. Finally, it might be good to point out how out-of-line such divisive hatefulness is in light of the current situation in which our country finds itself.

Thanks. We really might be able to start showing the radfems that we are not without power. People should be fired over this.

Sorry, I wanted to mention again that Colleen Conant, executive editor and publisher of the Boulder Daily Camera, can be reached at conantc@thedailycamera.com. You might want to carbon copy Steve Millard at millards@thedailycamera.com. He's the Editorial Page editor.

See if you can get friends to write in protest as well. You really would be shocked by how vile this display is. My wife, a recovering feminist, went with me. She was equally astounded and horrified.

yah, i did the usual – letters to a presumptuous media that is already as feminist as the schools, libraries, and government

somehow it don’t get the bulldog fed on this one, tho

this one demands a physical response – we can’t be good little germans any more -- we need to take it off the boards and into the street

i think we’d best reclaim our dicks while they’re still attached

there may even be a few females left in america who prefer that option

even in “progressive” boulder there must be a few activists – i’m kinda surprised they aren’t raising a stink – this monstrosity has been on display since oct. 19!!

at the very least there should be pickets demanding removal of the exhibit (we could later enshrine it) and library administrators

surely this issue is close enough to us all to cross the organizational and political lines of various men’s groups in colorado?

there’s a “denver men’s council” at 303-397-0545

something called “new warrior” at 303- 964-3150

in boulder:

a “boulder men’s center” at 303- 444-8064

a “boulder men’s group” at 303-415-9512

a “toltec men’s lodge” at 303-449-2376, ellis@changingthedream.com -- run by jeffrey ellis and brandt morgan, who describe themselves as “master teachers in the lineage of don miguel ruiz, author of ‘the four agreements’” – if these dudes know jackshit about authentic toltecan sorcery, then the librarians can KEEP my appendage

a “men’s support group” at 303-449-7898

a “men’s emotional and spiritual support group” (yuck – sorry) at 303-443-9015, sun8@earthlink.net

a “men’s council journal” at box 4795, boulder 80306

of course the “promise keepers” are based in boulder, but i think we can safely skip them – they’re kinda busy begging forgiveness (from their male deity) for being male

in colorado springs:

a “center on fathering” at 800-mydad-34 or 719-634-7852

other:

m.a.l.e. at 800-949-6253, male@malesurvivor.org

out of all of these groups there’s gotta be at least a few men

i'll do what i can

thomas, can you keep us updated on the situation out there?

In my opinion

This exhibit only provides further evidence as to the violent nature of the people who claim to be against violence. Anyone remember the death threats women's groups made against Steinmetz? (The woman who investigated domestic violence by women):

http://www.vix.com/pub/men/battery/politics/threat s.html

Also, there was a study on lesbian victims of domestic violence that found that 5% couldn't go to the local shelter for abused women because their abusers worked there!

Thank you for all of the contact information. I will get in touch with every one of these groups regarding this matter and, yes, I will keep you posted on what's happening here regarding this matter.

I truly wonder how many people realize just how evil this is. I went to a party tonight in the town of Broomfield, very near Boulder. It was a French party, but many of the people there were Americans (who speak French). Several had heard of this and most of the people there were decidedly anti-feminist or at least in complete agreement that this is an atrocity. It was honestly refreshing. Not all women, by any means, buy into the evil called feminism. Several of the women there were decidedly non-feminist, if not anti-feminist and, as you would expect, they were strong, intelligent, good women with a great deal of self-respect.

This "art" is a hate crime!
by cheddah on Sunday November 11, @05:18PM EST (#17)
(User #190 Info)
From ACFC mailing:

All,

The below is shocking. Every study on domestic violence informs
us that at least half of serious altercations are initiated by women.
Yet, the Boulder Public Library insists on presenting this issue with
hate of men -- the "art form" is male organs strung up like trout
caught on a fishing trip.

The only difference between sexism and racism is the target for
socioeconomic abuse. While everybody is going bananas over
fraternities at Auburn "playing" with racist imagery at fraternity
parties, the City of Boulder is living in sexism, and it thinks this
is just fine and dandy.

Is this a hate crime? What do you suppose would happen if the
Boulder Library put up an "art show" consisting of little "arabs"
strung up as a statement about 9-11? The ACLU would crush
the City of Boulder under a pile of lawsuits!

There should be lawsuits filed over this, for sure. As public institutions,
Cities have to live up to certain standards of truth -- and there is nothing
to back what the City of Boulder has done, factually or would permit
permit such an intentional statement about men hiding behind the veil
of an "art form". It is about time that radical feminists pay for their sick
attitudes through the nose.

I have had experience dealing with these people, who also like to pull
off these public stunts at shopping centers. I suggest the following:

1. Write a letter to the editor of the Rocky Mountain News at
        letters@RockyMountainNews.com

2. Download the ACFC handout on domestic violence and leaflet
the library in Boulder with it. Local activists should demand equal
space and time in this PUBLIC facility for putting up their own
display on domestic violence, which should be in the form of
a well done literature stand with leaflets about the truth of
        domestic violence.

        ACFC leaflet: http://www.acfc.org/study/acfc-dv-handout.pdf
Citations by Dr. Martin Fiebert: http://www.acfc.org/study/DV-Fiebert.htm

3. Local activists should be attending City Council meetings demanding
the immediate resignation of the top brass at the library, along with
anyone involved in setting this public hate crime up, and raise a major
stink utilizing every First Amendment right available to them, until the
        City Council makes adequate reparations.

Boulder library's 'string of penises' artwork miffs some
by Lynn Bartels and Julie Poppen, News Staff Writers

BOULDER -- If it's any consolation, from a distance they look like socks
hanging on a clothesline.

That's the assessment from Karen Ripley, director of cultural programs for
the Boulder Public Library.

She is stunned at the outcry over a piece of art that features 21 ceramic
. . . ummm . . .. men's appendages, which are displayed on a clothesline in
the library. It's entitled "Hung out to dry."

"Men find this disturbing, but women find it amusing," Ripley said.

"I think it's rather powerful myself," said Julia Wrapp, a city planner
who was attending another function at the library Wednesday night.

The artwork is part of an exhibition sponsored by Safehouse, which assists
women and children who are victims of domestic violence. The exhibit,
"Art Over Domestic Violence," has been on display at the library gallery
since Oct. 19.

Not surprisingly, Ripley said, the artwork by domestic violence victims
features themes about men, women, sexuality and violence.

"The whole point of the exhibit is to make people think about domestic
violence," Ripley said. "The Safehouse is trying to bring it to the
public's attention."

Ripley said the library hadn't received a single complaint until what is
known as the "flag flap."

Marcelee Gralapp, longtime library director, initially refused a staff
request to display a large American flag from the glass ceiling at the
library's south entrance. She has since relented, but the brouhaha
resulted in public scrutiny.

Ripley said 52 people called the library Monday over the flag flap, and
three of them mentioned the clothesline piece.

Radio talk-show host Peter Boyles on Wednesday discussed the artwork.

A sign outside the gallery alerts visitors that they may find the display
offensive. It says: "This exhibit contains mature material that may be
objectionable to some."

The gallery is the site of a variety of community events, including a
celebration Wednesday night of the 50-year anniversary of the city's
planning department.

Community activist Ricky Weiser said she saw a young boy stare at
the clothesline exhibit. Then she heard his mother say, "No dear, they're
corn cobs."

Planning director Peter Pollock said it was hard for the planning
department's anniversary party to compete with media attention over
the clothesline piece.

"Fifty years of planning doesn't cut it when you have a string of
penises," he said.

I visited the Boulder Public Library site and had a look at the "Contact Us" page for the main library : http://www.boulder.lib.co.us/branch/departments.ht ml

You'll notice that in addition to Ms Ripley (who you can email directly), almost every other Department Head apears to be female. Hmmmm. Perhaps a lack of objectivity in deciding what the public might like to see on display?

Hey, forget severed breasts. Let's carve out and string up the closest female body part to the penis (it's made from the same flesh that creates the penis in males, in fact). Let's carve out and string up their clitorises.

(No, I'm not advocating genuine violence against them or any women. I'm just incredibly pissed off right now.)

thomas –

thanks for following up on the local contacts

did you see angelucci’s offer? if you can pull a protest together, or find a local contact who can, i strongly advise including angelucci in the activities, perhaps this upcoming saturday -- he can deal w/any legalities, and has some media savvy plus the x factor

i can’t afford the trip, but i'll seek alternative transportation if a protest is scheduled – i’ll check on driveaways heading east

i live in central washington, near the canadien border – any activists travelling by car from seattle, spokane, or vancouver b.c., contact me

i can’t overemphasize what a cherry this is – even a small protest, if handled properly, will make a big splash, particularly in emboldening others to break their silence and inactivity

the inclusion of females in any protest would also be very helpful – any tough mamas out there?

Guys, anything you can do to get crap like this taken down is fine by me. If you can find a woman to tear it down she probably won't go to jail. Failing that, create lots of fliers with the words "STOP HATING MEN" on them and post them everywhere. Make a noise. Be a nuisance. Have people taken leave of their senses? If it weren't for the likes of Trudy W Schuett, Christina Hoff Sommers, Melanie Philips and Erin Pizzey I wouldn't have respect for any woman. These people want to think they're morally superior to us? Sounds to me like they're living on past glories.

On the subject of the violence of anti-violence campaigners, here's a prime example. Erin Pizzey, who established the world's first refuge for battered women in 1971 in London, England, incurred the wrath of feminists for daring to point out that many of the women coming into her refuge were as violent or more violent than the men they were leaving. Eventually Pizzey had to move to France because she and her family were receiving bomb threats!

"Men find this disturbing, but women find it amusing," Ripley said.

And this is usually the case with sexual harassment against males as well as all other violent sex crimes. And violent sex crimes are exactly what this sort of hatred causes by giving the sick offenders the belief that everyone agrees with them (Lorena Bobbitt for example.)

For God's sake, SUE!!!!!
