I suggest we all chip-in and buy Ms. Thobani a one-way ticket to the mountains of Afghanistan, where she'll learn the true meaning of oppression.

First there was the anonymous British Columbian who made a complaint to the police about Ms. Thobani's "hate speech". That was double irony, since both the mechanism of being able to make such a complaint and the guaranteed anonymity of the complainer were both put in place by the feminist left for their own use.
Then to add to the mirth I saw a representative of the Canadian Civil Liberties Association on television practically foaming at the mouth over the "outrage" of this "harassment" perpetrated against Ms. Thobani. He was particularly bothered that we were now being subjected to the "ridiculous" notion that one can discriminate against those in the majority. He seemed so angry that the definitions of what was "hate speech" who was "discriminating" against whom, and who was the "victim" were being defined by other than he and his friends. Poor chap.
It was so much fun seeing that at least some of the heavy sticks that the feminist left has been hurling at the rest of us for decades are, in fact, boomerangs. :-)

For what it's worth (not much, I expect), I sent the following letter to the Canadian Ambassador to the United States:
October 8, 2001
Ambassador Michael Kergin
EMBASSY OF CANADA
501 Pennsylvania Avenue, N.W.
Washington, DC 20001-2114
Dear Mr. Ambassador,
I am writing to express my anger with regard to the comments made by Sunera Thobani last week at the Women's Resistance Conference in Ottowa. I hope her vitriol, especially her anti-male sentiments, do not represent the views of the government of Canada or of its people. I am especially outraged by the fact that the government of Canada contributed such a large sum of money to support this event and that the Secretary of State Hedy Fry sat quietly by and appeared to support this obscenity.
Please understand, I respect the national sovereignty of Canada and their independence from the United States, and I respect the right of individuals to speak their own mind. In that light, I believe Thobani is entitled to her opinion. However, it would appear that the government of Canada has turned against one-half of its population, the male half, by sponsoring this event and failing to denounce these statements. When I put this in the context of Canadian laws like Bill 117, the Tory government's Domestic Violence Protection Act, I must conclude that it is the goal of the Canadian government to either encourage all men to leave, or to enslave those who stay.
I hope that you will pass this message to the Prime Minister, and I hope that he will denounce Thobani’s remarks as not being in keeping with equality among the sexes in Canada.

I don't know if anyone is still reading this thread, but there was more on the news tonight.
Sunera Thobani spoke at a "peace rally" Saturday. It was a public event, but the media were excluded; Ms. Thobani brought her Women's Studies enforcers along to make sure that the cameras were kept at bay.
I found all of this rather dull and predictable. Ms. Thobani believes in feminist fascism and as a result has no interest in any "free speech" or "the people's right to know" unless it's her speech that is free and she who has a right to know. She wanted to preach to the convertedin this case to the professional protesters who frequent such ralliesand didn't care to have any dissenters present asking awkward questions.
What gave me a good chuckle was that in the group charged with keeping the cameras away was Judy Rebick, former president of NACSW (Canada's answer to NOW) and someone I consider to be a dyed-in-the-wool man-hating feminazi. Ms. Rebick spent her time chewing out the newshounds for "mistreating" Ms. Thobani, which is hilarious because one of Ms. Rebick's favourite hobbies is verbally dissecting right-wingers on camera.
I do enjoy the fact that the feminist / artistic / literary intelligencia of Canada are closing ranks around the feminazis (Ms. Thobani) and smug liberal writers (Timothy Findley) who enjoy badmouthing "the patriarchy". They're all closing ranks, and they all look like a bunch of fools. Finally!

With regards to Hedy Fry, everyone in Canada knows she's a flake since her "burning crosses" faux pas earlier this year.
For our American friends, Dr. Fry claimed that racism is rampant in Canada, and that white supremecists were burning crosses in Prince George (a small city in northern B.C.) "as we speak". Dr. Fry claimed to have, as evidence, a letter from the office of the mayor in Prince George. The mayor pointed out that he had never heard of a cross burning in his city, and quipped that maybe Dr. Fry had the wrong cityor the wrong country. Dr. Fry was later forced to admit (obliquely) that there was no letter and she had been talking off the cuff. Needless to say it made her look like a fool. (Appropriate, since she is a fool.)
I am quite sure that when news of the Thobani speech broke the Prime Minister was thanking God that while Hedy Fry did listen to the whole speech in silence and didn't admonish Ms. Thobani for her hate-filled vitriol, at least she didn't give Ms. Thobani a standing ovation. I'm sure that it crossed her mind, but that she had the wits to realize that it would have been the last act of her political career.
I wonder if Hedy Fry is going to survive the next federal election. She's one of the few Liberal party MPs in the West, and has traditionally relied on the fact that her riding is very left-leaning, given that the constituents are for the most part either young professionals or gay. Nonetheless, she can do only so many incredibly stupid and insensitive things before people decide she's a loser and boot her out. Let's hope it happens soon.

Wendy McElroy talking about free speech is a joke.
She's censored no less than 3 of my postings on her ifeminist message board.
She's a bit of a hypocrit if you ask me.
