Gendercide: War Is Hell

News Adam Jones wrote this interesting piece about the slaughter of ethnic-Albanian men in Kosovo. Much is heard around the world about the killing of women because they are women. Jones provides an interesting look at the killing of men and the lack of attention it gets in the media. A broad sample of media commentary is presented to demonstrate that "unworthy" male victims tend to be marginalized or ignored entirely in mass-media coverage. A trio of common marginalization strategies is discussed, and a theoretical framework of "first-order," "second-order," and "third-order" gendering is proposed to clarify the deficit in coverage. This deficit is then contrasted with the attention given to the victimization experiences of "worthy" victims, such as women, children, and the elderly.

I think the sad truth is that feminist/liberal media outlets do not pay much attention to the male victims of gendercide because the atrocities are carried out by men - "second class citizens" killing other less fortunate "second class citizens." This concept fits neatly into the pseudo-logical feminist theories that explore the reasons why male modeled conflict resolution methods are unsound (of course the female role in conflict - whether it is active or as a passive beneficiary of war are never examined).

The media/feminist analysis of gender-selective human-rights abuses as a whole in Kosovo -- are inclusive definitions and they are not matched by inclusive analysis of the mass killing of (non-combatant) men. The fact that media outlets put as much or more importance into the possibility that some women had forced unwanted sex over the gendercidal extinction of an entire ethnic group of men is disgusting... feminists are not humanitarians - they are sexist elitists, and the coverage of the Kosovo tragedy clearly outlines that men have a lower value than women do in media coverage. Can you imagine what would have happened if women were targeted for gendercide in this conflict?
