The Draft An Anonymous User writes "This isn't an article per se, but were you aware that the Libertarian Party has launched an online campaign to end Selective Service? Did you know that a bill to end the draft has been introduced to the House of Representatives? Check out the official website for more information, and to sign the petition supporting HR 1597: endselectiveservice.org"

As a matter of maintaining a strong national defense, I'm not sure I agree with this initiative. Yes, the draft, as it's currently implemented is discriminitory, and no, I don't like the idea of myself or my son being forcefully sent off to war. But human nature being what it is, there will surely be another war. What I prefer to see is for the military to get back to its prime purpose of national defense and stop pandering to the female careerists who simply want to punch their card on the way to the cushy jobs at the top.

Well, we wouldn't be the first to do it. France officially ended their selective service program a couple of weeks ago. I don't know what other nations still have selective service, but the ending of those programs may be some kind of trend.

I personally would not be bothered at all by the end of the draft. Like those Web pages say, the modern battlefield is becoming less and less human anyway.

The big lie that the government wants us to believe is that the draft is "necessary." This is completely false. When the U.S. was truly in danger, in WWII, obtaining recruits was no problem. There was no "draft" in WWII, at least not the way we think of it. What happened was that so many men bombarded recruitment offices that the military was overwhelmed. A "draft" was instituted to give order to the process, a way of saying, "Take a number and wait for us to call you." It was not a way of forcing unwilling and terrified soldiers to a brutal battlefield gallows.

In Vietnam, the draft was "needed" because no one in their right mind was going to commit suicide for the sake of a foreign flag. This is arguably the most disgusting thing about the draft. It's not used to protect this nation. It's used to protect foreign nations. It's used to fight wars that we have no business being involved in to begin with.

You know, one of the reasons why I have chosen not to have children is because I refuse to manufacture a human cog so that it can be fed into a government War Machine 18 years (or less--lots of people want to draft minors) down the road.

The draft is slavery. The draft is cold-blooded murder. The very presence of the draft devalues human life itself. It has no place in a free society. It has no place in a civilized society. The fact that other countries are abolishing it gives me hope that more people are realizing this.
