Inequality This report on Excite News claims that prison inmates who are mentally ill often go untreated, and that the number of mentally ill people in prison is underestimated. It also says that female prisoners are treated at a higher rate for mental illness than their male counterparts. Anyone surprised?

If there's anything I'm surprised about it's that the Bazelon Center for Mental Health Law was willing to report this as a gender disparity. I respect them for that. They've reported for some time now that mentally ill prisoners are more likely to be treated it they're female. Being a politically-progressive organization they would ordinarily face pressure to hide this fact and only mention race. But instead they included it in their fact sheet, fact #2, headed "Mental health treatment is unevenly available by gender and race." (http://www.bazelon.org/criminal3.html).
