Short Article on Male Victims of Rape

News This short, fairly superficial transcript from a news program on Australia's ABC network mentions the existence of male rape victims, and the lack of support services for them, but that's about it. There was no comment about what kinds of circumstances male rape occurs (for example, by exposing the high incidence of prison rape), and the woman being interviewed claims that the court system is "patriarchal" and this discourages men from coming forward. So while I wouldn't describe this as progress, it is noteworthy in that something was at least said about male rape, rather than nothing.

The disdain for men just oozes out of this one doesn't it? The solution has to come from the "male lobby" because "we" (presumably feminists) don't want to "undermine" all of the work "we" did "for women". Cheap, transparent rationalization. How thoughtful.

I suppose I'm like a 70's feminist when I read these pieces: I'm always struck by the irony of a news outlet that thinks that in order to discuss the crime of rape against males they need a female interviewer and a female psychologist. A long time ago I remember that all scientists were men, and women complained bitterly that the only people on TV talking about rape, PMS, PPD, and other female complaints were men interviewing other men. Quite rightly the women pointed out that these men, no matter how well-meaning, always seemed to talk about women as though they were an interesting species of lab rat.

What about these two women? They talk about male rape victims as an interesting phenomenon, not as people.

A trivial article, but as you said Scott: it's good to see someone at least mentioning the subject.
