The Inevitability Of Violent Men

Science The Globe and Mail printed this science article about the roots of "male violence." A species of freshwater fish and fig wasps were studied, and testosterone levels of the males were monitored in various behavior situations. But is it reasonable to compare the behavior of simple organisms such as insects with conscious men? As Mark Lesmeister put it, "This article's headline makes the mistaken substitution of 'men' for 'males.' Human beings aren't cichlid fish or fig wasps."

As a relentlessly analytic person, the sh*t that passes for science—or at least science reporting—these days amazes and dismays me.

Why do the media feel a need to supply a soapbox for snotty pseudo-science written by self-absorbed women on the subject of men and masculinity? It does not surprise me that someone would write a piece trying to connect the behaviour of male insects, the behaviour of male fish, and the behaviour of male human beings. What surprises me is that it is published in a respectable national newspaper, rather than being written in a pink diary with a lock on it.

Perhaps the Globe and Mail is beginning to subscribe to the "infinite number of monkeys with an infinite number of typewriters" theory of writing good copy.
