UK Government Abandons No-Fault Divorce

Divorce In a controversial move, the British Government has eliminated the law allowing no-fault divorces. "the Government said it was not convinced "that removing fault grounds will substantially influence the way parties conduct themselves throughout the divorce process". A spokesman for the Lord Chancellor's Department added: "The reduction of acrimony and the adoption of a more conciliatory approach to divorce may require a cultural change beyond the realms of legislation." It all seems rather complicated, and I must admit that I can't get my head around the ramifications of this, except to point out that "no fault" divorces here in Canada are always construed to mean "his fault."

Perhaps at least in this way it's a good thing.

Yes, I wasn't sure what to make of this myself - whether it is good or bad overall for men. I suppose since men tend to lose so much in a divorce, anything which discourages divorce could be helpful, but likewise I don't think men should feel stuck in a bad marriage either. It is also probably a positive thing for children, so long as abuse isn't going on in the house (and if that were the case it would still under the law be grounds for a prompt divorce anyway).
