From "Marcus", in the "Manhood Online" forum discussion on "IVF for single and/or gay people":
"Since when have children become a commodity or accessory that you have a right to own?"
We just can't seem to deny ourselves anything, can we? Man or woman, feminist, humanist, masculist, or whatever-ist, we all drool when some new technology comes along that will give us what we want, regardless of whether it is right in any larger sense.
IVF, cloning, and now the creation of sperm and eggs. Of course, the media images dangled in front of us at the start will be of poor, suffering, infertile couples who are two steps this side of angels, crying over the fact that they can never have babies. Science to the rescue, and we all applaud!
Then, a short time later the definition of who is really in need will expand, and expand, and expand until it includes anyone who has a want. Can't have kids? Or maybe you just don't like the opposite sex very much? No problem. Just pop down to the pharmacy at Wal-Mart and pick up your Auto-Baby kit and follow the step-by-step instructions in your own home.
The baby boomers popularized the idea of babies as possessions to be paraded about ("Baby on Board"). Now the next generation is set to turn babies into commodities, and I think that the world will be the worse for it.
All of this because, when other people clamour to debase life to get something that they want, we are wise enough to say, "No!" However, when faced with someone we want... well, self-denial is becoming a rare thing indeed.
