posted by Scott on Tuesday December 26, @09:34PM
from the news dept.
News Backlash.com is reporting that Steve Blake, president of R-KIDS of Minnesota, is currently in prison for failure to pay child support. However, Steve claims to have paid his required $750/month payment and has begun a hunger strike to draw attention to his injustice. I plan to follow up on this story for further developments. I have no contact information for people to call at this time.

I sent an e-mail to the address at the R-KIDS MN web site last night, but as of this time have received nothing in response. Be sure that as soon as I get more information, I will update this story.

Herein is the correct account of Steve Blake's
situation leading up to his incarceration as related to fellow R-KIDS member Jim Rose via a phone conversation on 12/28/00 from the Winona County (Minnesota) jail:

In January of 1986 Steve's son Andrew, in a
malpractice incident, was overdosed with a drug
resulting in massive brain damage. Five years later, an Illinois court awarded Andrew
$64,000,000.00 for his injuries. From that apparent suit, the parents were awarded $3,000.00 a month. In 1994 Steve filed for a divorce
after his wife, Mary Blake, expressed desire that
Andrew should die and get it over with (Parent's stand to inherit Andrew's money). At that point the court split the $3,000.00 payment in half, giving $1,500.00 to each parent. This was their sole income.

In April of 1995, Mary Blake obtained an ex-parte order for Steve's expulsion from the house. In that order, the court reduced Steve's payment by $750.00 and gave it to Mary Blake clearly labeled as support for her and the minor children. No visitation was allowed with any of his three children. Two years later in the divorce decree, the judge ordered that the payments to the parents from Andrew's estate remain as ordered in the ex-parte order. The judge then ordered additional child support. It is this additional support that Steve has refused to pay. The judge also found no evidence of abuse even though an original ex-parte order was based on Mary's claim of being terrified of Steve.

Steve's relationship with his children has been
destroyed. The two older children, while in their
mother's custody, have both dropped out of school
before completing the tenth grade.

You can leave messages with Steve at this number:

The following information has just been received (1/2/01):

A demonstration has been planned for Wednesday January 3rd, 2001 at 4:00 pm at the Winona County jail, to encourage the release of Steve Blake. However, this planned demonstration has not yet been confirmed. If he is released prior to this date and time there will be no demonstration. This is just to make you aware what could possibly take place. You will be notified
later in the day whether it is confirmed or cancelled.

Here is the latest update regarding Steve Blake's incarceration as provided by R-KIDS member Jim Rose (1/3/01):

I would like to encourage everyone to call Judge
Collins in Winona County to put some pressure on him to release Steve Blake from the Winona County jail. When calling, express solidarity, concern for his health amidst his hunger strike, and that he be released because of the illegality of his
incarceration.

Please refrain from defamation of character, and don't swear. In other words, keep it clean and be firm, but civil and polite.

His number is: 1-507-457-6480 This is the number at the district court and will probably be answered by the court administrator.

Note: There will be no demonstration on Wednesday Jan. 3rd. I will keep you posted on any other
developments.

Thank You
