Fair Treatment For Boys: An Editorial By Christina...

Boys/Young Men George writes "I found this editorial by Christina Hoff-Sommers at the Washington Post site. It was apparently sparked by an op-ed piece done by David Sadker criticizing her book The War Against Boys. A lot of the information she includes in this article comes straight from her book. She talks about the reality of boys' underachievement in schools in the US and the efforts of 'gender experts' like Sadker and organizations such as NOW to oppose any initiative to remedy this growing imbalance. She expresses hope that increased social awareness of the fallacies promoted by 'die-hard girl partisans' will begin to reverse this unfortunate trend. It's encouraging to see that major news media sources seem to be giving her a fair share of the airtime. Click here for the link."

As an aside, I think The_War_Against_Boys is valuable book for those interested in how gender issues have been affecting our schools, and how well (or not so well) boys are faring in the process. I'm not sure I agree with all of her views, but she argues each of her points coherently and uses good supporting evidence throughout the book. I think what is most important is that she is calling attention to these issues, making people take notice of policies and practices of which they may not have even been aware, identifying the people and groups of people who have been the primary influences in this policy-making, and motivating people to really question whether these are the best ways, or even good ways at all, to deal with the issues that boys and young men face. It would be interesting to hear any particular thoughts that others might have about this book.
