Heated exchange between women’s shelter, men’s issues panel

'Representatives from local women shelters had a heated discussion with a men’s issues panel at Monday night’s screening of the Red Pill documentary.

About 30 people attended the event, held at Second Street Theatre, despite heavy snowfall. The controversial documentary by filmmaker Cassie Jaye looks at issues raised by Men’s Rights Activists (MRAs), such as domestic abuse perpetrated by women and the alleged bias against fathers in family courts. Among other things, MRAs in the film say there are hardly any supports available for men who are abused by their female partners.

Speaking via Skype during a question-and-answer period, Edmonton-based Youtuber Karen Straughan suggested domestic violence shelters shouldn’t be called “women’s shelters” and should be open to both sexes.

“Men in crisis are not going to reach out to something that’s actually labelled a women’s shelter,” she said, speaking to representatives from Grande Prairie’s Odyssey House women’s shelter. “I would suggest also that because men are much less likely to accept help, even when it’s offered freely, that what you need to be doing is putting out more feelers into the community to bring the men who are in crisis in to you...”

Odyssey House executive Director Ebony Rempel said the organization’s role is to provide shelter for women, but it does what it can to help men in need.'
