Like being "called to Rome", some men now fall on their swords

'Morgan Spurlock, the American documentary filmmaker, said in a post published Wednesday that he had committed sexual misconduct in the past, including settling a harassment allegation and cheating on his wives and girlfriends.

In a statement posted on Twitter late on Wednesday, Mr. Spurlock said he was making his admissions while watching women publicly accuse high-profile men in a range of industries of sexual misconduct, and saying it was “time for me to be truthful as well.”

“As I sit around watching hero after hero, man after man, fall at the realization of their past indiscretions, I don’t sit by and wonder “who will be next?” he wrote in the statement, which was linked to his verified Twitter account. “I wonder, ‘when will they come for me?’”

“You see, I’ve come to understand after months of these revelations, that I am not some innocent bystander, I am also a part of the problem,” Mr. Spurlock said.

Mr. Spurlock, 47, was propelled to fame by his 2004 documentary assault on fast food, “Super Size Me,” in which he probed the effects on his health of gaining 25 pounds while eating nothing but McDonald’s food for a month. He went on to make more than a dozen other movies with credits for producing, directing, acting and writing.

In his post, he reflected on the details of an encounter that he had when he was a student in college. In that account, he said he “hooked up” with a woman who later wrote a short story for a class about it, accusing him by name of rape.

He said he was “floored” when a friend told him about the woman’s short story. “This wasn’t how I remembered it at all,” he said.'

Rather than face an inevitable disclosure of a clearly false rape allegation made against him and the fact that he *gasp* cheated on wives and girlfriends (and they didn't? Not once?), this man has decided to do what Roman aristocrats used to do under Caligula: just pro-actively give themselves up and let themselves be whacked. Caligula was known for accusing landed aristocrats of treason and trying and sentencing them to death, then seizing their lands. So, wealthy men started to just go to him and give him their lands as a "gift" to show their loyalty in hopes he didn't eventually have them killed. Sometimes it worked, other times not. It seems a similar thing has started to happen. I suppose I ought to come clean, myself. When I was in college... sometimes... more than once, I'll admit... I banged a drunk chick. I was usually drunk, too. But no matter, that is not what is relevant. The point is, SHE had consumed one or more drops of one or more alcoholic beverages and so was INCAPABLE of consenting (though I was). There, I've said it. Let there be no more speculation. I fall on my sword. May All-Mighty God/Goddess/the gods/the Universe/etc. have mercy on my miserable, wretched soul.
