Swedish music festival to be female-only 'until all men learn how to behave themselves'

'"Sweden's first man-free rock festival will see the light next summer," its organiser has confirmed, following a string of sexual assault reports at other festivals in the country.

It was announced on Saturday that BrĂ¥valla, Sweden's largest one, would not be taking place in 2018 after police received reports of four rapes and 23 sexual assaults at this year's event.

Following the news, Swedish radio presenter and comedian Emma Knyckare tweeted: "What do you think about putting together a really cool festival where only non-men are welcome, that we'll run until ALL men have learned how to behave themselves?"'

... when gender segregation is so actively pursued without the influence of religious extremism?

Reminds me of the difference between communism and fascism: the flags. Only the flags are really different.

Do ALL women know how to behave themselves?

I'd like to see some men-only events start to happen.

When women complain about it, they will be told that men deserve places they can go without fear of being falsely accused of something.

Boycott every single band, sponsor and anything else you can identify associated with this event, for life even if they assure you at some point in the future that they've "changed".

And why the hell do young men in these European countries where they're treated like this, still show up for national service?

Ultimately, single-sexing one's business ventures is self-destructive. In terms of revenue, you need to draw more paying customers at a single-sexed event as that same event would draw w/out single-sexing it. This works so rarely that typical business practice is to limit access to the good/service only to people who can pay for it. Denying sales to people for no other reason than a physical characteristic is such an unsound business practice that in times past when such things as racial segregation existed, businesses either still did not do so or the practice lasted relatively briefly simply because businesses that did not discriminate were so much more competitive, those that did were driven out of business quickly.

In the market of very specific, themed events, it may actually be economically defensible to limit access based on sex; doing so may in limited circumstances actually result in higher sales than otherwise. But as a general rule, such a strategy is rarely successful. It's so predictably unsuccessful that pursuing it is considered irrational behavior.

All this is aside from the moral/ethical questions around restricting access to an otherwise public venue (even if admission is charged) based on indellible personal characteristics.

What's next? Blue-eyed people only night? A film festival where only people over six feet tall are allowed in?

Just because the law says it's OK to do doesn't make it right. After all, were Jim Crow laws "right"? Most laws are defensible/just. Some are not. Allowing otherwise public venues to discriminate against people based on indellible characteristics is a legal failing by omission.
