'The act of stealthing — described as the non-consensual removal of a condom during sex – will be considered rape and attract a maximum penalty of life in prison under a suite of new laws introduced to Queensland parliament today.

One-in-three Australian women and one-in-five Australian men have been victims of the “insidious” act, according to a 2018 study by Monash University.

First reported by The Guardian, the proposed legislation will also seek to criminalise coercive control, and allow judges to inform juries of common misconceptions about sexual assault.

The Sunshine State joins Tasmania, NSW, Victoria, South Australia and the ACT in making stealthing illegal – a move that was one of 188 recommendations last year by Queensland’s Women’s Safety and Justice Taskforce.'

'For years, I split the bill on dates. As a Latina from a lineage of women whose lives had been micro-managed by family patriarchs, I thought I was breaking bad generational patterns by interacting with men as equals rather than as providers.

Consider New College, the small liberal arts public college in Florida that in recent years has been about 66 percent female, with gender studies majors galore. Now it’s ground zero in Ron DeSantis’s “war on woke.” Courses on sex and gender are out, and to attract more men, the school is beefing up not male friendly majors like political science or philosophy or physics, but sports. Grades, as well as SAT and ACT scores, are lower for the new freshman class, reports the Sarasota Herald-Tribune: “Much of the drop in average scores can be attributed to incoming student-athletes who, despite scoring worse on average, have earned a disproportionate number of the school’s $10,000-per-year merit-based scholarships.” Merit-based scholarships for jocks! Conservatives are fine with affirmative action, as long as the beneficiaries are (white) men.'

'The Rochester Institute of Technology has a persistent and yawning gender gap—what some have called its “infamous gender ratio.” It is nearly two-thirds male, a number that has remained relatively stable for years, sometimes raising eyebrows among prospective female applicants.

That’s why RIT introduced a slate of programs and scholarships aimed particularly—and in many cases, exclusively—at women. They include a Women in Engineering at RIT (WE@RIT) group, as well as a series of summer and after-school programs designed to encourage high school girls to apply to RIT and enter STEM fields.

If there is anything to be learned from the Johnny Depp and Amber Heard trial, it is that it is too simplistic to assume that only men are offenders and only women are victims.

Most essays about domestic violence center around the “Man Bad, Woman Good” mindset. Rather than taking another spin on the faulty and outdated Duluth Domestic Violence Power & Control Wheel (which assumes that all victims must be female and all perpetrators must be male), it is time to examine other considerations.

There are many more issues in intimate partner violence (IPV) than power and control. Domestic violence often occurs among couples who are poor and those with less education. Some couples simply lack an ability to resolve a conflict or to avoid escalation. One or both partners may suffer from depression, anxiety, or immaturity. There are other factors.

'There seem to be as many interpretations of what “toxic masculinity” means as there are uses of the term.

Some believe it’s a way to criticise what they see as specific negative behaviour and attitudes often associated with men. Others, such as broadcaster Piers Morgan, claim that media interest in toxic masculinity is part of a “woke culture” that aims to emasculate men. Others believe toxic masculinity is a fundamental part of manhood.

My research into working-class young men in south Wales shows how masculinity is changing. Some men remain hostile to the notion of toxic masculinity and see the term as a vehicle for shaming men. And some are caught in a conflict between changing ideas of masculinity and traditional, unhealthy expressions of manhood. This is further complicated by the term itself.'

'Northwood University, which has run a female-only award program since 1970, appears to be ignoring a legal agreement it signed in January to open the program to all eligible individuals regardless of sex.

Civil rights watchdog Mark J. Perry told The College Fix via email that Northwood openly defied the legal agreement with its Sept. 13 announcement of the five latest female recipients of the Distinguished Women Awards.

He added the university, a private Michigan-based institution, even expanded the awards by introducing the new Distinguished Young Women category.

'The National Science Foundation has tapped a set of scholars to study one of its programs that funneled $365 million into diversifying STEM, but appears to have had little effect in the field of engineering.

The $300,000 grant doled out by the National Science Foundation will investigate factors influencing Broadening Participation Initiatives, or BPIs, which aim to increase the participation of women and other underrepresented groups in STEM.

The grant was recently awarded to the University at Buffalo’s Matilde Sánchez-Peña, an assistant professor of engineering education.

An article published by the University at Buffalo’s news center highlights how Sánchez-Peña and her colleagues will use their recently awarded NSF grant to “study why, despite 20 years of investment, woman [sic] make up only 20% of engineering students and tenure-track faculty.”'

'The Harvard professor Claudia Goldin has won the Nobel economics prize in recognition of her groundbreaking work examining wage inequality between men and women.

The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences said on Monday that Goldin’s research “provided the first comprehensive account of women’s earnings and labour market participation through the centuries” to reveal “the causes of change, as well as the main sources of the remaining gender gap”.

She becomes only the third woman to win the prize, after Elinor Ostrom in 2009 and Esther Duflo in 2019. The prestigious award is worth 11m Swedish kronor (£819,000).'

'Syracuse University faculty and staff members from the D’Aniello Institute for Veterans and Military Families (IVMF), recently returned from Jacksonville, Florida, where they hosted a record-breaking turnout for the 26th installment of the Veteran Women Igniting the Spirit of Entrepreneurship (V-WISE) conference. The cohort for this unique training program is exclusively composed of women who are either veterans themselves or military spouses with aspirations to launch or expand their small businesses.

V-WISE is held biannually across the United States, and while this wasn’t the first time the conference was held in Jacksonville, this cohort turned out to have the largest in-person turnout of more than 190 women actively participating in the three-day conference.'
